Which AGA appliances do we repair?

We repair the full AGA line sold in the US. That means the Classic cast-iron heat storage cookers such as the eR7. It also means the Elise and Mercury ranges in 36 and 48 inch widths. We handle the AGA French door refrigerators, 24 inch dishwashers and hoods too. Dual fuel and induction models are both covered.

AGA started with one idea. Swedish physicist Gustaf Dalén built the first AGA cooker in 1922. It stored heat in heavy cast iron and gave it back slowly. The newer eR7 cookers keep that design but run on electricity. The Elise and Mercury ranges work more like a pro-style range, with a gas or induction top and a multifunction convection oven.

How an AGA cast-iron cooker fails

A heat storage cooker is simple, and that is why it lasts. There are few moving parts. When one goes wrong, the signs are slow. The roasting oven takes all day to get hot. The simmering oven runs cool. A hotplate never reaches full heat.

On an electric eR7, the cause is usually an element inside the cast iron that has burned out. A thermostat or temperature sensor that reads wrong is next on the list. After that comes the control board that switches each oven. We test each element for resistance before we order anything. That matters, because AGA parts are not cheap and guesses cost you money.

Older gas and oil models are different. There, we look at the burner and the flue. A dirty burner or blocked flue can make the cooker run cold and smell of fumes. That needs a visit soon, not next month.

Problems we see on Elise and Mercury ranges

These ranges get the same faults as other pro-style ranges. On a dual fuel AGA range, a burner that clicks but won't light usually has a wet or cracked igniter. Sometimes the cap is just sitting crooked. If the flame catches and then dies, suspect the flame safety part. An oven that is slow to heat often has a weak bake element or a failing convection fan motor.

Induction models have no flame, so the checks change. If a zone won't power on, we look at the cooling fan, the power board and the pan. Many dead zone calls turn out to be a pan that is not magnetic. We will tell you that on the spot rather than sell you a part.

We also fix AGA refrigerator problems like a warm fresh food side, frost on the back wall or a noisy fan. On an AGA dishwasher, standing water after a cycle is most often a clogged filter or a drain pump that has jammed.

What an AGA service visit looks like

A visit to diagnose your AGA costs $79. If you let us fix it, you don't pay that fee. Before any work starts, the tech writes up a fixed price. No surprises when the job is done.

We use genuine OEM parts. Some AGA parts ship from overseas, so we may not have them on the truck. If we need to order, we book your return visit before we leave. Whoever we send to your AGA is licensed and insured, and we ran a background check on them first. Our repair warranty covers the work.

Most calls get a same-day visit. Call in the morning if you can. A cold AGA in winter means a cold kitchen, and we know it.

Is an old AGA cooker worth fixing?

In most cases, yes. A cast-iron AGA is built to be repaired, not thrown out. The iron castings rarely wear out. The parts that fail are elements, thermostats and controls, and those can be swapped. Replacing the whole cooker means moving a very heavy unit and often redoing the kitchen around it.

The Elise and Mercury ranges are a closer call. If the oven cavity is rusted through or the control board is no longer made, a new range may make more sense. We lay out the repair cost next to our honest opinion, and the choice is yours.
