Which Kenmore Appliances Do We Fix?

Who Actually Built Your Kenmore?

This is the first thing we check. Kenmore is a store brand. It grew up at Sears and is now owned by Transformco. Over the years, Kenmore products came from suppliers such as Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Electrolux and Panasonic. Whirlpool was the longest partner. That deal ended in 2017.

The model number tells the story. On a Sears model number, the first three digits are a source code. That code points to the real maker. The digits after it name the model. So the Kenmore washer and the Kenmore fridge in one house may come from two different factories.

Why should you care? Parts and common failures follow the maker, not the badge. A Kenmore fridge built by one company shares many parts with that company's own models. That often makes parts easier to find than people expect. Have the model tag handy when you call. It is usually a sticker inside the door, on the door frame, or along the cabinet edge.

Common Kenmore Breakdowns and Their Causes

• Fridge warm, freezer still cold: Often the evaporator coil, the cooling coil behind the freezer panel, is packed with frost. A failed defrost heater or a stuck evaporator fan usually causes it.
• Top-load washer won't spin: Look at the lid switch, the drive parts, or a clogged drain pump. The drain pump is the small pump that pushes water out.
• Front-load washer leaks or smells: The door boot is the rubber ring at the opening. It tears, or it traps socks and lint.
• Dryer spins but stays cold: An electric model often has a burned heating element or a blown thermal fuse. A gas model often has a weak igniter.
• Gas oven won't bake: A worn igniter can glow but never get hot enough to open the gas valve.
• Dishwasher holds water: A clogged filter comes first. A failed drain pump comes second.

Because Kenmore came from many makers, the exact fix depends on the build. Two Kenmore dryers from two suppliers can have different heat circuits. We test the part before we swap it.

Here is a real pattern. A Kenmore Elite French door fridge stops making ice, and a week later the fresh food side gets warm. Those two things feel unrelated. Often they are not. Frost from a failed defrost cycle can block both the ice maker's air and the fridge's air. Fixing the defrost fault solves both.

Before you call, try two quick checks. Make sure the fridge's condenser coil, the grid of tubes near the floor, is not caked with dust. On a washer, pull out any socks stuck in the door seal. Is an Older Kenmore Worth Fixing?

Often, yes. Many older Kenmore units are simple machines. Belts, fuses, switches and igniters cost little and are easy to find. A Kenmore dryer that just needs a thermal fuse is a clear repair, even at ten or twelve years old.

The math changes with a sealed system failure on an older fridge. By sealed system we mean the compressor, the coils and the refrigerant sealed inside them. That job costs more. On a fridge near the end of its life, a new one may make more sense. Some newer Kenmore models also use control boards that can be slow to source. We will tell you straight. If a fix does not make sense, you hear it before you spend a dollar on parts.
