Traulsen equipment on our repair list

We repair Traulsen G-Series and R-Series reach-in refrigerators and freezers, plus Spec-Line and Centerline cabinets. We also work on Traulsen blast chillers, prep tables, undercounters, milk coolers and hot food holding cabinets. Dual-temp and Even-Thaw units are covered too. Old or new, we start with the data plate.

Traulsen is part of ITW Food Equipment Group, the same parent as Hobart. Most Traulsen refrigeration is made in the United States. You'll find these cabinets in hospital kitchens, school cafeterias, hotels and chains.

Symptoms and causes on Traulsen cabinets

Reach-in running warm. Start at the condenser coil. It sits on top of many Traulsen reach-ins and throws off the heat the box pulls out. In a busy kitchen it picks up a felt of grease and lint. A clogged coil makes the compressor run long and hot. Clean it and many warm-box calls end right there.

Frost wall inside the box. Behind the inner panel of a Traulsen sits the evaporator, a coil that gets very cold. If it freezes solid, cold air stops moving. We check the defrost heater, the defrost control and the fan motor that moves air over the coil.

Doors that don't seal. G-Series cabinets use EZ-Clean gaskets. They still tear and flatten with years of slamming. A bad gasket lets damp air in. That feeds frost and pushes the temp up.

Blast chiller slow to pull down. A blast chiller has to take hot food below 41 degrees fast. If a batch misses the target, we check the food probe, the fans and the condenser. A dirty coil hurts a blast chiller more than a reach-in because the load is so heavy.

Prep table rail warm. The pan rail is open to kitchen air. Lids left up, blocked air ducts and a weak fan are the usual causes.

Hot food cabinet not holding heat. Traulsen also makes heated holding cabinets. A failed element or thermostat is the usual cause. A bad door gasket lets the heat leak out.

From first call to finished repair

A warm Traulsen in a health-care kitchen is serious. Patient trays and stored meds can't sit at the wrong temp. We try to get most calls out the same day. The earlier you call, the better.

The visit opens with a full check of the Traulsen cabinet. The diagnostic is $149 for businesses. You won't pay it if you approve the repair. We then quote a fixed price, and work starts only when you agree.

Each part we put in a Traulsen is genuine OEM. If the right part isn't on hand, the tech books the follow-up visit before leaving. Our repair warranty covers the job. Our people carry a license and insurance, and each one is background checked before they work for us.

Should an older Traulsen be repaired or replaced?

Traulsen cabinets are heavy stainless boxes, and many run for a long time with basic care. For a failed fan, gasket, control or defrost part, repair almost always wins.

A sealed system failure takes more thought. On a Traulsen, that means trouble with the compressor, the coils or the refrigerant they share. If the body is sound and the doors close well, fixing it is often still smart. If the cabinet has rust in the floor and hinges that are shot, we will tell you. You make the call with both prices in front of you.
