U-Line products we repair

We repair U-Line undercounter refrigeration of every kind. That covers ice makers that make clear, nugget and crescent ice, plus wine refrigerators, beverage centers, refrigerator and freezer drawers, and combo models. We work on the 1 Class, 3000 Series and 5 Class lines, plus outdoor and marine units built to sit outside.

U-Line is a Milwaukee company. Henry Uihlein Sr. invented and patented the first undercounter home ice maker in 1962. The company still designs and builds its products in Milwaukee today. Because these units live under a counter, they breathe through a front grille. That one detail explains a lot of the service calls we get.

Why a U-Line ice maker stops making ice

The clear ice maker is what U-Line is known for, and it needs care. Water flows over a cold metal plate called the evaporator. Ice builds in thin layers, so it comes out clear. The slab then drops onto a heated cutter grid that slices it into cubes. Our U-Line ice maker repair work usually starts with one of these.

  • Scale on the evaporator. Hard water leaves minerals that stop the slab from releasing. U-Line calls for its own ice machine cleaner, since other cleaners can damage the plate finish.
  • A burned out cutter grid. The slab sits on top of the grid and never becomes cubes.
  • A drain problem. Clear ice makers must drain melt water. A clogged drain line or a failed drain pump makes the unit shut down or flood the bin.
  • A water valve fault. No water reaches the plate, so no ice forms.

Chicago and Houston both have hard water. If your cubes are cloudy or small, a cleaning is overdue.

Warm wine fridges and beverage centers

A U-Line wine refrigerator or beverage center that runs warm has a short list of causes. The condenser coil behind the front grille gets packed with dust and pet hair. The unit can't shed heat, so the compressor runs hot and the cabinet warms up. Cleaning the grille and coil fixes many of these on the first visit.

Say the coil is clean and it still runs warm. Then we check both fans, the thermistor (the temperature sensor) and the control board. Frost building on the back wall points to a defrost problem. A compressor that tries to start and clicks off may need a new start relay. A true sealed system leak is the costliest fix, and we will tell you plainly when it isn't worth it.

For a U-Line undercounter refrigerator or freezer drawer, drawers that won't close tight are common too. Worn gaskets let in warm air and cause frost.

Booking a U-Line visit with A+

Call early and there is a good chance we come that day. A home diagnostic costs $79 and it's waived if you approve the work. You hear the fixed price before we start, not after.

We fit genuine U-Line parts. Cutter grids and control boards are not always on the truck. If yours has to ship, the tech books the follow-up visit on the spot. We only send licensed, insured techs, each one screened with a background check. The repair is backed by our warranty.

Is it worth fixing an older U-Line?

Usually yes, if the sealed system is sound. Fans, pumps, valves, grids and boards are all fair repairs on a unit that is built into your cabinets. A new built-in unit also means matching the cut-out and the panel.

A leaking evaporator or a dead compressor on an older unit is different. Then a new unit is often the smarter spend. We will show you both options.

U-Line units keep us busy in Chicagoland and Houston, around L.A. and Pasadena, and across Northern Virginia and the District. Start with our Chicago-area service page.
