Maytag began in Newton, Iowa, in 1893. It built its name on washers and the famous lonely repairman ads. Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. Today most Maytag machines share parts with Whirlpool models. That keeps parts easy to get.

What breaks on a Maytag

Top load washer won't agitate or spin. Check the lid first. A broken lid lock or lid switch stops the cycle. After that, we look at the drive belt or motor coupler, the link between motor and transmission.

Pet Pro washer slow to drain. The Pet Pro filter catches pet hair. When it fills up, water drains slowly. Clean it often. If it's clean and the tub stays wet, check the pump next. It may be blocked.

Front load washer smells or leaks. The Maytag door boot, a rubber collar at the opening, holds water. Tears in it cause leaks.

Dryer takes two cycles. A clogged vent is the first suspect. A failing heating element, cycling thermostat or gas igniter comes next.

Fridge not cold enough. A frosted evaporator coil means defrost failed. A dirty condenser coil or failed fan makes the compressor work too hard.

Dishwasher leaves film. Hard water, a clogged filter or a weak wash pump.

Range burner or oven dead. An igniter, element, switch or sensor.

Is it worth repairing an older Maytag?

For washers and dryers, almost always. The fixes tend to be belts, switches, pumps, igniters and elements. These are cheap next to a new pair. We see plenty of 12-year-old Maytag dryers that just need a belt and a roller.

There are exceptions. If your front loader is an early Neptune from the late 1990s, it may be time to move on. Parts are harder to find, and those machines had a rough record. The same goes for a fridge with a failed compressor on a low-end model.

A failed transmission on a top loader is another close call. We will price it and compare it with a new washer. Then you choose.

Simple Maytag checks you can try first

Some problems don't need a tech. These quick steps are worth a try.

• Washer won't start. Close the lid firmly. Then unplug the washer for a minute to reset it.
• Pet Pro washer drains slowly. Empty the Pet Pro filter. Then run a rinse and spin.
• Dryer is slow. Clean the lint screen. Then check the vent hose for crushed spots or lint clogs.
• Dishwasher leaves grit. Remove and rinse the filter under the lower rack.
• Fridge is warm. Vacuum the coils and make sure nothing blocks the air vents inside.
