How a Miele induction cooktop decides to heat
A Miele induction zone will not heat an empty surface. Miele says the power stops right away if no pan is there. The cooktop also reads the size of the pan and heats only that area. This is smart, and it confuses people. A zone that seems dead may just not like the pan.
The KM 7000 series adds PowerFlex areas. Two zones can work alone or join as one large area for a long pan. A TwinBooster mode sends up to 7,400 watts to one spot for a fast boil. The touch keys wake up when a pan lands on the glass. The wider Miele story is on our Miele appliance repair page.
Induction zones that fail with the right pan
First, rule out the pan. Use one that a magnet grabs hard. If the zone still will not start, a part has failed. The usual two are the coil under that zone and the power board that feeds it.
One board often drives two zones. So when two zones on the same side quit together, we suspect the board. When a single zone quits, the coil or its sensor is more likely. A fan under the glass cools the boards. If it fails, the top may shut down after a few minutes of hard use.
Touch keys that do not answer can be a wet surface, a locked panel or a failed control strip. We test each in turn.
Miele gas burners with a weak or missing spark
Miele gas cooktops light with an ignitor at each burner. Miele describes it as the white piece that sticks out from the side of the burner base. It must be clean and it must be dry. Miele says a wet ignitor will not spark.
The burner also has to be put together right. Miele notes two small screws that hold the burner head. If they work loose, food gets under the head and the flame goes ragged. Clogged holes in the burner cap cause the same thing.
When one burner will not spark and the others do, that ignitor or its wire is bad. When none spark, we look at the ignition module and at power to the cooktop.
Electric models and CombiSets
Miele also sells smooth electric cooktops and narrow CombiSet units. A CombiSet is a small module, and owners line up several in a row. Each one is its own appliance with its own wiring. So one can fail while the ones beside it work. On electric models, a zone that will not heat has an open element or a bad switch.
Steps Miele suggests, and a few of ours
- For gas, clean the burner parts and the area around the ignitor.
- Dry everything well before you put the burner back.
- Check that the gas shut-off valve is fully open.
- Miele says to cut power for one minute at the plug or breaker, then try again.
- For induction, center the pan and try a second pan.
- Look for a lock symbol and hold the lock key to clear it.
If gas is in the air and no knob is on, test nothing. Go outside and ring the gas company.
What a Miele cooktop call looks like
Booking is by phone or on our site, 6 AM to 9 PM. We fit most calls in the same day. Each tech is licensed and insured, and we ran a background check on him.
He starts by running each zone or burner. Then he opens the unit and tests the suspect parts. The diagnostic at a home is $79. If you have him do the repair, that fee is not charged. His quote is a fixed amount, part and labor together, given before he begins. Miele boards and coils are not always truck stock. If one must be ordered, we set the return visit right then. A 30-day repair warranty covers the repair.
Repair or replace a Miele cooktop
We lean toward repair. A Miele cooktop is cut into stone in most kitchens. A new model may not fit the same hole. An ignitor, a coil or one board costs a small part of a new unit.
Two cases change that. Cracked glass on an older model can be costly, and sometimes the glass is no longer sold. And if two boards and the control strip have all failed, the total can pass the point of sense. We lay out the numbers and you decide.
A+ is a family firm. It is independent and has no tie to Miele. Our Miele cooktop work covers Los Angeles and nearby cities, listed on the California appliance repair page. We also go to homes in D.C., Houston, Northern Virginia and Chicago. If your cooktop is the top of a full range, read Miele range repair. For the oven under a cooktop, see Miele oven repair. After the fix, we boil a pot of water on each zone to prove it.
