Steam and combi-steam ovens need descaling

We start with steam, since it is where Miele differs most. A Miele combi-steam oven is three tools in one. It is a convection oven, a steam oven and a mix of both. The steam comes from a generator that sits outside the cooking space. Miele calls the system DualSteam.

Water leaves minerals behind each time it boils. That scale coats the generator and the small pump that feeds it. Skip descaling and steam gets weak. Then the oven throws a water fault or will not start a steam program. Miele ships descaling tablets with these ovens for that reason.

When a descale cycle does not clear the fault, we step in. We test the pump, the steam heater, the level sensors and the drain valve. Some models lift the control panel by motor to reach the water container. If that panel jams, its small drive motor has failed.

An oven that will not reach temperature

On an electric Miele oven, the cause is most often an element or the temperature sensor. A Miele oven has more than one element. If one fails, preheat takes far too long. If the sensor drifts, the screen says 350 and the cavity is at 300.

Miele range ovens have a moisture feature for bread and roasts. It sprays a burst of steam into a hot oven. That needs a water valve and a small line. A bake that works while the steam burst does not points to that valve, not the elements.

Gas range ovens light with a glow igniter. A tired igniter glows dull orange and the gas never opens. It is one of the quickest oven repairs we do.

Touch screens, knobs and probe faults

Many Miele ovens use the M Touch screen. It works like a phone. When it freezes or goes dark, try the breaker once. A screen that stays dead needs a display or a control board.

The roast probe can also mislead. A bent plug or a dirty socket makes the oven think the meat is done. Clean the socket and try a second time before you blame the oven.

A Miele speed oven fits a full oven and a microwave into a short cabinet space. When baking works and the microwave mode does not, a high voltage part has failed. When it is the other way around, we look at the elements and fan. More on the microwave side is on our Miele microwave repair page.

Try these first

• If the steam oven asks for a descale, start that program.
• Empty, rinse and reseat the water container.
• Wipe the door seal and check that the door shuts flat.
• Test the oven with a cheap oven thermometer on the middle rack.
• Note the full text of any fault on the screen.

After self clean, give the door at least an hour. The lock waits for the cavity to cool.

You will know the cost before we do anything. Testing a home oven is $79. That $79 is taken off when you approve the work. The quote is fixed and has the labor and the parts in it.

Our oven techs are all licensed and insured, with background checks done. They run the oven, read its fault list where the model allows and test parts with a meter. Visits happen all seven days, and same-day is normal. Miele elements and sensors may need to ship. If so, the second visit is set before we leave. A warranty backs the repair.

Old Miele ovens are still worth the work

Miele says it tests most of its home lines to match 20 years of average use. It is careful to add that this is not a promise. In our view, it does mean the frame and cavity outlast the small parts. An element, sensor, igniter, pump or valve is a fair repair at any age.
