One grill, three fuels
The Hybrid Fire Grill is what most people mean when they say Kalamazoo. It comes in three widths, sold as the K500, K750 and K1000. Each is built by hand in Michigan from heavy stainless steel.
Under the grates is a drawer. Leave it empty and you cook with gas. Load it with lump charcoal or split wood and the gas burners below set the fuel alight. You can then turn the gas off or leave it on.
The burners are thick cast stainless pieces that Kalamazoo calls Dragon Burners. They are made to take the heat of a wood fire sitting on top of them. They still need care. Our Kalamazoo repair page covers the whole outdoor kitchen.
What ash does to a gas burner
A plain gas grill only sees grease. This one sees grease and ash. Ash is fine, dry and slightly sticky when it meets grease. It falls through the drawer and lands on the burners.
- Ash fills the small ports where flame comes out. The flame goes yellow and lazy.
- Ash coats the igniter tip. The spark can't jump, so the burner clicks and does not light.
- Ash and grease cake in the bottom of the firebox. That mix holds water and eats at parts.
The fix starts with a deep clean. We pull the grates, the drawer and the burners. We clear each port and check each burner for cracks. Then we test the flame.
Ignition faults
If no burner sparks, look at the power source for the igniter first. If one burner will not light but its neighbors do, the electrode at that burner is fouled, cracked or bent away from the port. We clean it, set the gap and check the wire back to the module.
You can always light a burner by hand with a long match to finish dinner. If a match lights it, the Kalamazoo has gas and only the ignition is at fault.
Low heat, stiff knobs and the rotisserie
Low heat across the whole grill is a gas supply problem. The regulator may be stuck. The line feeding the island may be too small for a grill this size. We put a gauge on it and read the pressure with the burners on.
A knob that is hard to turn means the valve behind it is dry or damaged by heat. Do not force it. A valve that snaps can leak. We replace the valve and test every joint with leak fluid.
A gas smell at the Kalamazoo with every knob off means shut the supply at the wall or the tank. Keep the hood open and call us.
The rotisserie is built into the grill. When the spit will not turn, we test the motor and the switch. A rear burner that will not glow may have a blocked orifice or a bad igniter.
A hood that drops fast or feels heavy has worn assist parts. Grates can warp if a fire is left roaring with the hood shut for hours. We can order new grates cut for your model.
Gaucho and other Kalamazoo grills
The Gaucho is a wood fire grill with a large wheel that lifts the grate. We fix its gas starter, the lift chain and the wheel hardware. The Shokunin is a kamado style charcoal grill with no gas parts. For that one we handle hinges, vents and seals.

Should you repair it
Yes. A Kalamazoo grill is welded into a stone island and built to last for decades. Burners, valves, igniters and grates are service parts. The body itself rarely needs anything.
For the rest of the kitchen, see Kalamazoo pizza oven repair and Kalamazoo outdoor refrigeration repair. Our grill repair page covers other makes. Kalamazoo has a showroom in Chicago, and we see many of these grills on the North Shore and across our Illinois service area. One habit saves most service calls. Empty the ash drawer once it is cold, every single time.
