The cold side of a Kalamazoo kitchen
Kalamazoo sells a full set of cold units for outdoor islands. There are door fridges and beverage centers. There are drawer units, including one with a fridge drawer over a freezer drawer. There are wine units with two zones, freezers, keg tappers and ice makers.
They share a build. The insides are stainless steel. Kalamazoo says the insulation is about a quarter thicker than rival units. The point is to hold temperature on a hot patio. Our Kalamazoo service page lists the cooking gear we fix as well.
Each unit type has its own weak spot
- Door fridges and beverage centers. The door gets opened all party long. Gaskets and hinges wear first.
- Drawer units. Slides bend and long gaskets twist. A drawer left open an inch frosts the coil by morning.
- Freezers. Defrost parts fail, and ice chokes the airflow.
- Wine units. One zone drifts when its sensor or fan fails.
- Keg tappers. Foam at the tap is often a warm tower or wrong gas pressure. It is not always a cooling fault.
- Ice makers. Scale, a stuck water valve or a blocked drain stops the ice.
Tell us which unit you have when you book. We load the truck to match.
Warm in summer: start with the coil
These machines breathe through a grille at the front. In May and June, tree fluff and pollen coat the condenser coil behind it. The unit can't push heat out, and the inside warms up.
You can help. Turn the unit off, pull the grille and brush the coil with a soft brush. Vacuum what falls. If the cabinet cools down over the next day, that was the fault.
If it stays warm, we go further. We test the condenser fan and the inside fan. We check the sensor that reads cabinet temperature. Kalamazoo uses a variable-speed compressor, and the board that drives it can fail after a power surge. Storms and patio outlets are a bad mix.
Frost, water and noise
Frost on a Kalamazoo back wall means damp air is sneaking in or the defrost has quit. We check the gasket with a light and a strip of paper. We test the defrost heater and its sensor.
Water under a Kalamazoo unit usually traces to a blocked drain tube. On ice makers, it can be a loose drain hose or a failed drain pump.
A new buzz or rattle is usually a fan blade hitting ice or a leaf. A click every few minutes and a warm Kalamazoo cabinet mean the compressor is trying and failing to start.
Winter and storage
In cold states, outdoor units need a plan for winter. Water lines to ice makers must be shut off and drained before a hard freeze. A split line floods the island in spring. Ask your tech to walk you through it. In warm states, the unit runs all year and needs its coil cleaned more often.
Diagnosis, pricing and scheduling
The charge to diagnose a home unit is $79. If you approve the fix, that charge is dropped. You are given a fixed Kalamazoo repair price first, parts and labor included.
Book online or by phone. From 6 AM, a Kalamazoo tech can be on the road. After 9 PM, Kalamazoo calls wait for morning. Most visits happen the same day. Our shop is independent, and one family owns it. We send licensed and insured techs, and each one is background checked. Fans, relays and sensors are common stock. Boards and gaskets are ordered for the model. A 30-day repair warranty backs the repair.
Repair or replace a Kalamazoo unit
Most faults are well worth fixing. The cabinet is heavy stainless steel and matches the rest of the island. A new one has to fit the same opening and the same door style.
The close call is a dead Kalamazoo compressor on an older unit, or a slow refrigerant leak. We price that Kalamazoo repair next to a new unit and leave the choice to you.
For the hot side, see Kalamazoo grill repair. Indoor models are on our refrigerator repair page. We service Kalamazoo cold units around Houston, where patio season never ends. We also reach Chicago, Los Angeles, D.C. and Virginia. Before leaving, we log the cabinet temperature and ask you to check it again the next afternoon, at the hottest hour.
