What makes a rangetop its own thing
People mix up rangetops and cooktops. A cooktop is set down into the counter, with its knobs on the top surface. A rangetop is deeper. It slides into a notch in the cabinet front, and the knobs face you. Picture a pro range sawn off just above the oven door. JennAir sells gas rangetops in the RISE and NOIR looks. The 48 inch model has burners plus a chrome griddle and a grill. Because the knobs are in front, the valves and switches sit right behind the front panel. That changes how we reach them. For the other JennAir products, see our JennAir appliance repair page.
The PowerBurner and its wide heat range
The big burner on a JennAir rangetop makes 20,000 BTU. It also turns down to 1,650 BTU for a simmer. It does this with two stacked rings of ports. High heat uses both rings. Simmer uses only the small lower ring. A valve with two stages feeds them. When the low ring is clogged, the flame dies as you turn down. When the valve wears, the jump from low to high gets rough. We clean the rings, check the gas pressure and test the valve.
Rangetop faults and what causes them
- Burner clicks and will not light. The igniter tip is coated with grease or cracked.
- All burners click nonstop. A boilover ran down a knob stem into a switch.
- No clicking at all. The spark module is dead or has lost its power feed.
- Flame lifts off the burner or roars. Gas pressure is high or the air mix is off.
- Orange flame tips. Dirt in the ports, or the top was set up for the wrong gas.
- Knob spins free. The plastic insert in the knob has split. The valve is fine.
- Knob is hard to turn. Grease has worked into the valve stem.
Griddle and grill sections
The griddle plate is plated with chrome. It holds heat and wipes clean. Under it is a long burner with its own igniter and thermostat. If the plate takes ages to heat, the burner is lighting on one end only. If it burns pancakes on low, the thermostat is stuck. The grill has a burner under a grate and a tray that catches grease. A grill that lights and goes out has a dirty burner or a weak igniter. Heavy flare-ups mean the tray needs cleaning.
Owner checks for a JennAir rangetop
Work on a cold top. Lift the grates and take off each burner cap and ring. Soak them in hot soapy water and scrub the ports with a nylon brush. Dry every piece in a warm spot. Wipe each igniter with a dry cloth. Put each piece back the way it came off. Confirm the power cord below the counter is in its outlet. After a big spill, let the knobs area dry overnight. Clicking often stops by morning.
Visit, price and 30-day repair warranty
On a rangetop, most parts are reached from the front. The tech pulls the knobs and drops the front panel. He can change a switch, a valve or the spark module without lifting the unit out. We charge $79 for a home diagnostic. That amount is waived when you okay the job. The price you get is fixed, with labor and parts both in it. Nothing is done until you agree. A+ is an independent repair company. The techs are licensed and insured, and each had a background check. We back the repair with a 30-day repair warranty.
Repair makes sense on a rangetop
A rangetop has no oven, no clock and few boards. It is burners, valves, switches and a spark module. Those parts last, and they can be swapped one at a time. The cabinet notch and the stone around it were cut to fit. So we nearly always fix a rangetop. The rare case for a new one is a cracked burner box or a top with heavy fire damage.
We repair rangetops in Georgetown, Chevy Chase and Foggy Bottom. For local notes, open our Washington D.C. appliance repair guide.
