JennAir cooktops and the downdraft idea
JennAir is the brand that made downdraft famous. It built the first self-venting downdraft range in 1961. The idea is simple. A fan under the counter pulls smoke and steam down through a grate in the cooktop. No hood is needed overhead. Today the JX3 downdraft comes on gas and electric radiant cooktops. There is also a newer downdraft induction model in 30 and 36 inch sizes. JennAir sells cooktops with no vent as well, in gas and induction. Older units spell the name Jenn-Air. We fix both eras. See our JennAir appliance repair page for the full line.
When the downdraft stops pulling
A JX3 blower moves 297 cubic feet of air a minute when all is well. Most weak vents are not a bad motor. Grease has filled the mesh filter under the vent grate. Air cannot get through, so smoke drifts up. Next comes the duct. It runs under the floor or through a cabinet to an outside wall. A crushed bend, a bird nest in the wall cap or a stuck damper flap will choke it. If the fan is silent, we test the switch, the motor and its wiring. A fan that howls has worn bearings or a wheel caked with grease.
Gas burner faults on a JennAir cooktop
- Spark but no flame. Grease on the igniter tip or clogged burner ports.
- Every igniter clicks when one knob turns. That is normal. One module fires them all.
- Clicking will not stop. A spill reached a switch under a knob.
- No spark on any burner. The spark module or its power feed has failed.
- Flame bends toward the vent. The downdraft is pulling it. Lower the fan speed, or let us adjust the flame.
- Weak flame on the 17,000 BTU burner only. Its orifice or valve is restricted.
Electric radiant and induction faults
A radiant cooktop has ribbon elements under the glass. Each has a limiter that cycles it. An element that glows full blast on every setting has a bad control switch. One that stays dark has burned open. If the hot surface light burns all day, a limiter has stuck.
Induction is different. The cooktop checks for a pan before it turns a zone on. It shuts the zone off when you lift the pan. So a zone that does nothing may only dislike the pan. If a magnet grips the base and it still fails, the coil or power board is bad. Two zones that will not bridge for a griddle point to the sensor or the control. Cracked glass on either type means the top must be replaced.
Try this first
Lift the vent grate and pull the filter. Wash it in hot soapy water. Dry it and set it back. Go outside and look at the wall cap while the fan runs. The flap should swing open. For gas, clean and dry the burner caps and the igniter tips. For electric types, reset the breaker and test with a flat pan that fits the ring.
Our visit and your cost
Our techs work under the counter as much as on top of it. They test the blower, check the duct they can reach and meter the elements or valves. A home diagnostic costs $79. You then see a fixed price for the whole job, parts and labor. If you approve, we waive the $79. No maker owns us, so we are independent. The techs have licenses, insurance and clean background checks. Most visits happen the same day you call, any time from 6 AM to 9 PM.
Why repair usually wins on a downdraft cooktop
A downdraft cooktop is tied to a duct and a cutout. Few other brands fit that setup. A new filter, switch, blower motor or igniter keeps the whole system in place. Whirlpool owns JennAir and stocks many parts. Some parts for very old Jenn-Air downdraft units are gone, though. We check supply and tell you at the visit.
We see many of these in Pasadena, Glendale and the San Fernando Valley. Our California service page has more. Crews also work in Chicago, Northern Virginia, D.C. and Houston. For knobs on the front and no vent, see JennAir rangetop repair. A unit with an oven below belongs under JennAir range repair. Clean the downdraft filter about once a month if you fry or sear often. It is the cheapest fix on this page.
