Induction zone that stays cold
Most Electrolux cooktop calls we get are for induction. The glass looks fine and the display lights up. One zone just will not heat the pan.
Under each zone is a copper coil. That coil gets its power from a board. When the board fails, the zone goes dead while the others work. Two zones often share one board. So if a pair on one side quits, that tells us where to look.
We check the whole circuit before we order a board. That means the coil, the sensor under the glass, the wiring and the supply voltage. A loose wire at the junction box can look just like a bad board.
Rule out the pan first
Induction only works with pans a magnet sticks to. Aluminum, copper and some stainless pans will not heat at all. The zone may flash and then shut off. That is normal, not a fault.
Pan size matters too. A small pot on a large zone may not be seen. Try a flat cast iron or steel pan that covers the ring. If that heats, the cooktop is fine.
What Electrolux sells in cooktops
The current line has 30 and 36 inch induction cooktops. Electrolux gives them a Temperature Control function and a feature named Power Slide. With Power Slide, you move the pan to go from a boil to a simmer.
There are also 30 and 36 inch gas cooktops. They have a brass power burner. A 36 inch gas rangetop has two of them. Older electric smoothtop models are still in many homes. Those use radiant elements under the glass and touch controls.
Each type fails in its own way. We carry different parts for each.
Gas burner faults
A gas burner that clicks but will not light is usually dirty. Spills coat the igniter and block the burner ports. We clean both and test the spark. If the igniter is cracked, it is replaced.
Nonstop clicking after the burner lights is a moisture sign. Water has reached a knob switch or the spark module. It may dry out by the next day. If not, we swap the wet part. A low or uneven flame means blocked ports or a cap that is not seated.
Electric smoothtop faults
A radiant element glows red under the glass. When one burns out, that spot stays dark and cold. The fix is a new element. An element that only runs on full heat has a control fault. The part that cycles the power is stuck on.
Touch panels can also fail. Keys that do not answer or beep at random point to the control board. Try wiping the panel dry first. Water on the glass confuses touch keys.
Cracked glass and when to stop using it
Stop cooking once the glass cracks. Liquid can run through the crack onto live parts. Turn the breaker off and call us. The glass top comes as one piece, and we replace it as a unit.
A few resets are worth a try on any type.
- Flip the breaker off for a minute, then back on.
- Hold the lock key to clear the control lock.
- Dry the touch panel and the pan bottom.
- Test a second pan that a magnet grabs.
- On gas, reseat the burner cap and let a wet burner dry.
What we charge and whether to repair
It costs $79 for us to diagnose a cooktop at your home. Book the repair with us and that fee is wiped. Our tech writes up one price, parts and labor together. You approve it or you do not. There is no pressure.
A+ is a family owned shop. We are independent, which means Electrolux does not pay us. You do. Whoever shows up has a license and insurance. Our background check comes before the first job. Igniters, switches and common elements are truck stock. Boards for induction are often ordered by model. Phones are answered 6 AM to 9 PM, every day. We can reach most homes on the day of the call. The website takes bookings as well.
A gas igniter or a radiant element is a cheap fix. We always say yes to those. One induction board is worth doing too. Cracked glass on an old electric top is where we slow down. The glass can cost close to a new basic cooktop. Electrolux says its new 30 and 36 inch models fit the same cutout, which makes a swap easier. Every repair we do has a 30-day repair warranty.
Northern Virginia homes are covered by our Virginia appliance repair team. We also work in D.C., Houston, Chicago and the Los Angeles area. Start at Electrolux appliance repair for the full list.
