The Bosch hoods we work on

This page is about the hood itself, the box that hangs over your cooktop. Bosch sells chimney wall hoods, island hoods, under-cabinet hoods and pull-out hoods. They come in the 300 Series, 500 Series, 800 Series and Benchmark. Finishes are stainless and black stainless.

A hood that hums but does not pull smoke

Start with the filters. Bosch hoods use metal grease filters. Bosch says to clean them once a month if you cook an hour or two a day. A filter caked with grease blocks the air. The motor still runs, so it sounds fine.

If clean filters do not help, the blower is next. The blower is a motor with a fan wheel. Grease gets past a dirty filter and coats the wheel. The wheel goes out of balance and the bearings wear. You hear a rattle, then a grind, then the motor slows.

The motor may also start on one speed and not the others. That points to the capacitor or the control board, not the motor itself.

Lights that flicker or stay dark

Hood lights sit in heat and steam all day. On a Bosch hood, a light that flickers often traces back to the control switch. It can also be the LED module or its small driver. If every light died at once, the driver or board is more likely than the bulbs.

We test power at the light socket first. That tells us which side of the circuit failed.

Buttons, touch panels and the filter reminder

Grease and steam work their way into push buttons. They stick down or stop clicking. Touch panels can go blind in one spot. A new switch board fixes both in most cases.

Some Bosch hoods run in recirculating mode with charcoal filters. Bosch says those cannot be washed. They should be changed every four to six months. The hood reminds you when they are full. If that light is on, the hood is not broken. It wants new filters and a reset.

Home Connect models link to your phone. If the hood works by hand but not from the app, that is a network issue first.

Noise is worth a note here. Bosch rates its hoods from 1.3 to 4.6 sones. That is quiet for a hood. A sudden jump in noise means something changed. Loose ductwork, a stuck damper flap or a bent fan wheel are the usual finds. A damper that will not open also kills airflow. You can often hear it tap when the fan starts.

Simple things to check yourself

• Pull the grease filters and hold them to a light. If no light shows through, wash them.
• Bosch says they can go in the dishwasher. Set them in loose, not wedged.
• Check the breaker. A hood often shares a circuit with other kitchen loads.
• Hold a paper towel under the running hood. It should pull up and stay.
• Go outside and see if the wall cap flap opens when the fan is on.

Book any day of the week, early morning to 9 PM. We try to come the day you call. Our tech is licensed and insured, and his background check is on file. He tests the motor, the switches and the lights while you watch.

The diagnostic runs $79 for a home. Tell him to go ahead and that fee comes off. His quote is fixed, and parts plus labor are inside it. It comes before he touches a tool. A warranty covers the repair.

Fix the hood or buy a new one

A switch, light driver or capacitor is a cheap fix. A blower motor costs more, but still far less than a new 800 Series or Benchmark hood. Add the cost of cutting tile or cabinets for a new size, and repair wins most of the time. We only talk about replacing when the motor and the board have both failed on an old basic hood.
