The three kinds of Bosch cooktop we fix
Bosch sells gas, electric and induction cooktops. Each comes in the 500 Series, the 800 Series and Benchmark. Widths run from 24 to 36 inches, based on the type. They look alike from above. Under the surface they are very different machines.
Gas models have four or five burners. Some carry a dual-stacked burner for high heat and a low simmer. Electric models use radiant elements under smooth glass. Induction models use coils that heat the pan itself. You can read about the brand as a whole on our Bosch appliance repair page.
Why a Bosch gas burner clicks and will not light
Most of the time the igniter is dirty or wet. A pot boils over and water runs into the burner base. The spark then jumps to the wrong spot, or does not jump at all. A cracked igniter does the same thing. So does a wet spark switch under the knob.
If every burner clicks at once, one switch is likely shorted. If no burner sparks, we test the spark module. Bosch gas cooktops can also show an E or F code. Bosch says that points to an electronics fault. Cut the power for a few seconds, then restore it. If the code comes back, the board needs testing.
Induction faults and what the codes mean
Bosch induction has more parts that can fail, and it tells you more. Here are codes Bosch lists for its induction tops.
- F1 or F6 means a cooking zone got too hot.
- F2 or F4 means the electronics under the glass overheated.
- F5 means a hot pan sat too close to the touch panel.
- E9000 or E9010 points to the wrong supply voltage.
- dE means demo mode is on, so no zone will heat.
Heat codes often clear once the top cools down. If they keep coming back, the cooling fan may have quit. A zone that stays dead with a good pan points to a failed coil or power board. Those two parts are the usual cause on Bosch induction.
Features can mislead you too. SpeedBoost sends extra power to one zone for a short time. AutoChef on the 800 Series and Benchmark holds a frying pan at a set heat. FlexInduction on Benchmark joins two zones for a griddle. If one of these acts up, the rest of the top may still be fine.
Things to try before you book
- Hold a magnet to the pan base. If it does not grab, induction will not heat it.
- Center the pan and match it to the zone size.
- Check that the child lock is off, since it blocks the touch panel.
- On gas, lift the cap and dry the burner base fully.
- Make sure the burner cap sits flat and does not rock.
- Flip the breaker off and back on to clear a stuck control.
Gas odor with all the knobs shut means you skip this list. Get outside, then phone the gas utility.
What the cooktop visit costs and how it goes
A+ has been a family business and an independent one. A cooktop diagnostic at a house costs $79. Have us do the repair and that fee leaves the bill. One fixed price, parts and labor together, reaches you before a single screw comes out.
The tech lifts the cooktop or opens it from below. He tests igniters, switches, coils and boards with a meter. Common parts ride on the truck, so many gas jobs end that day. An induction board may need to be ordered. Hours run 6 AM to 9 PM daily, and online booking is there too.
Cracked glass, old boards and when to stop
A gas cooktop is nearly always worth fixing. Igniters, switches and valves are small parts. Induction is a closer call. One bad coil or board is a fair repair. Cracked glass plus a failed board on an old 500 Series can cost close to a new top. We will tell you that before you spend money.
Do not cook on cracked glass. Liquid can reach live parts below.
