Why not cooling is one of the harder calls

A refrigerator moves heat from inside the box to the room. Lose either fan and cooling collapses, even with a perfectly healthy compressor. Lose refrigerant charge and the system can run continuously without ever pulling the box down to temperature.
What our technician found
This refrigerator had two problems at once, which is more common than people expect because they are frequently connected.
A failed fan was part of it. When a fan stops, air stops moving across a coil, and everything downstream of that suffers. If it is the evaporator fan, the coil gets cold but the cold air never reaches the compartments, so the freezer might feel acceptable while the fresh food side climbs. If it is the condenser fan, heat has nowhere to escape, head pressure rises, and the compressor runs hot and long trying to accomplish work it cannot finish.
The system was also low on refrigerant charge. A sealed system is exactly that, sealed, and it does not consume refrigerant the way a car consumes fuel. A charge that has dropped left through somewhere. We recharged the system and replaced the failed fan, which restored cooling to the unit.
Being straight about a recharge
We would rather tell customers the truth here than oversell the outcome. Recharging a sealed system restores cooling, and in this case it did. But because refrigerant does not get used up, a system that was low had lost charge somewhere, and the honest thing to say is that a recharge addresses the symptom while the rate of any remaining loss determines how long the result lasts.
Some systems hold their charge for years afterward. Others lose it again. What we will not do is promise you which one you have when we do not know. What we can do is get the refrigerator cooling again today, tell you plainly what we found, and make sure you are making the call about your own appliance with real information rather than a sales pitch.
Things worth checking on your own refrigerator
Some of the most common cooling complaints we get called out for have causes a homeowner can find in ten minutes.
Pull the unit out and look at the condenser coil underneath or behind it. If it is packed with dust and pet hair, the refrigerator cannot release heat, and it will run constantly while struggling to hold temperature. Vacuum it a couple of times a year. This one item is responsible for a remarkable share of the not cooling calls we run.
Listen for the fans. Open the freezer and listen for air movement. With the door switch held in, the evaporator fan should run. Silence in the freezer when the compressor is running is a strong clue.
Check the door seals. Close the door on a dollar bill and try to pull it out. If it slides free easily, that gasket is leaking warm humid air into the box continuously, which shows up as poor cooling and frost buildup.
And make sure the vents inside are not blocked. A refrigerator packed wall to wall cannot circulate air, and the areas without airflow will not stay cold no matter how well the machine is working.
