Two components on that path had failed on this refrigerator, and they were replaced: the filter housing and the water inlet valve.

The inlet valve is the electrically controlled gatekeeper where your home water line meets the appliance. When you press the dispenser, the control energizes this valve and it opens to let water through. These valves fail in a couple of ways. The internal solenoid can burn out so the valve never opens, which gives you no water at all. Or the valve can partially seize or clog with mineral scale, which gives you the weak trickle that a lot of people live with for months before calling.

The filter housing is the assembly that holds the water filter and seals it into the water line. When the housing cracks or its seals fail, it can leak, restrict flow, or let air into the line. A compromised housing is a common and often overlooked reason a dispenser stops delivering water properly, and it is easy to miss if you only look at the filter itself and not the part that holds it.

The repair, and why we test afterward

With the new filter housing and water valve installed, our technician ran the dispenser and confirmed water flowed properly, at full pressure, with no air sputtering and no leaks at either connection. That last part matters more than it sounds. Change the water filter on schedule, usually every six months. A clogged filter is the single most common reason for weak dispenser flow, and a filter left in far too long can restrict water to a trickle and strain the rest of the system. If your water tastes different or the flow has been dropping off gradually, the filter is the first thing to check.

Use manufacturer-approved filters where you can. Off-brand filters vary in quality, and a poorly fitting one can seat badly in the housing, leak, or restrict flow, which puts stress on the very parts that failed here.

And pay attention to gradual changes. A dispenser rarely dies all at once. The flow usually weakens over weeks, which is your window to address a clogged filter or a failing valve before it stops completely or starts to leak.
