Whirlpool sells top load and front load washers. Top loaders come with a tall agitator or a low impeller plate. Whirlpool also makes a 2 in 1 model. Its agitator post lifts out by hand, so you can wash with or without it. Some washers have a Load and Go dispenser that holds soap for up to 20 loads. Top load and front load machines fail in different ways. Tell us which you have and the model number from under the lid or inside the door.
A modern top loader locks its lid before it spins. If the lock cannot engage, the washer stops. Whirlpool shows this as LdL on some models and F5 E2 on others. First, look for something in the way. A sock over the rim or soap crust on the latch will block it. Clean the strike and the slot. If the lid is clear and the code returns, the lock assembly has failed. It is the most common part we change on Whirlpool top loaders. If the lid locks and the washer still will not spin, we look lower. A worn drive coupler or a bad shifter will leave the basket still while the motor runs.
A tub full of gray water points at the drain path. Some models show drn. Small clothes slip past the basket and land in the pump. A baby sock is the usual find. The pump may also burn out with age. Check the drain hose first. It should not be kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe. We pull the pump, clear it and test the motor.
LF or Lo FL means the washer took too long to fill. Open both taps all the way. Whirlpool washers want both hot and cold turned on, even for a cold wash. Check the hoses for kinks. The inlet screens can clog with sand after street work. If the code is HC, the two hoses are on the wrong taps. When water supply is good and the fill is still slow, the inlet valve is failing.
Ofb means the load is off balance. Open the lid and spread the clothes out. One heavy item with nothing to offset it will cause it. OL means too much is in the basket. Take a few things out. If the washer bangs with a fair load, the fault is in the suspension. Top loaders hang on four rods with springs. When they go soft, the basket swings and hits the cabinet.
A Sud code means too much foam. The washer adds rinses to clear it, so the cycle runs long. Use HE soap only, and less than you think. Too much soap also leaves a film that smells. Run a cleaning cycle once a month. On front loaders, wipe the door seal and leave the door open to dry.
