Fridge side warm, freezer side fine

On a 5 Series side-by-side, this is the pattern we see most. Viking cools both sides with a single compressor. It calls the system ProChill. Cold is made on the freezer side and shared with the fresh food side by moving air.

So when milk is warm and ice cream is hard, the compressor is fine. The cold is not getting across. We look at four things.

• The evaporator fan. If it stops, no cold air moves at all.
• The air damper. This small door meters cold air into the fridge side. It can stick shut.
• A frosted coil. When defrost fails, ice blocks the air path.
• The fridge sensor. If it reads too cold, the control never opens the damper.

Viking refrigerators by line

5 Series built-in. Side-by-side units 42 and 48 inches wide, in stainless or panel ready. They have electronic controls with a digital readout and no door dispenser. An ion air purifier, which Viking calls Plasmacluster, runs inside.

Veil integrated. All-refrigerator columns 24, 30 and 36 inches wide, plus a 36 inch bottom freezer. They hide behind cabinet panels. A color touch screen runs them. There is a filtered water dispenser inside the door.

3 Series. A 36 inch French-door, counter-depth unit that stands free. It has a water dispenser inside and a wide drawer Viking calls the Cold Zone.

When the whole unit is warm

Both sides warm means the cooling system itself is struggling. Built-in units pull air through a grille and across a condenser coil. Dust packs that coil over the years. The compressor then runs long and hot.

A variable speed compressor is driven by an inverter board. When that board fails, the compressor will not start, or it starts and stops. You may hear a faint buzz and then nothing. Swapping the board is far cheaper than swapping a compressor, so we test it first. If the compressor runs steady and the coil barely cools, the sealed system may have a leak. That is the costly repair, and we say so up front.

Leaks, heavy doors and tired seals

Defrost melt water leaves through a small drain and lands in a pan under the unit. When the drain clogs, water backs up and pools under the drawers. On Veil units with an inside dispenser, check the filter seat and the water line too. A slow drip there can run for weeks before anyone sees it. Low flow at the dispenser usually means the filter is due.

Built-in doors are tall and carry loaded metal bins. Over time the hinges wear and the door drops a little. The gasket then rubs at the bottom and gaps at the top. You may see sweat on the frame or feel cold air at the edge. Veil doors hang on a hinge that adjusts three ways, so we can often true the door without new parts. On a 5 Series, a worn hinge is replaced.

Owner checks worth five minutes

• Read the display. A set point that was bumped is an easy fix.
• Look for Vacation or Sabbath mode on Veil models.
• Vacuum the grille where the unit breathes.
• Close a dollar bill in the door. If it slides out freely, the seal is weak there.
• Leave space around food on the shelves so air can move.

Diagnosing a home fridge is a $79 visit. That amount is waived if you approve the work. We hand you a fixed price with labor and parts in it, and nothing starts until you agree. Food is at risk, so we try hard for a same-day visit. Fridge calls are answered as early as 6 AM and as late as 9 PM, all week. Techs are insured and licensed, and each has passed a background check. Fan motors, sensors, relays and defrost parts are on the truck. The fridge repair is warrantied. Online booking is open day and night.

Fix or replace a built-in Viking

Fans, boards, dampers, sensors and gaskets are clear repairs. A built-in unit is tied to your cabinets, and a new one of another size means carpentry. Sealed system work on a unit past fifteen years is the gray area. We look at the liner, the doors and the hinges before we advise you. If the box is sound, the repair usually still wins.
