What makes a rangetop its own repair
Picture a pro range sawed off just under the burners. That is a rangetop. It slides into a gap in the cabinets. The knobs face you on the front panel. Below it is a drawer or a door, not an oven.
That shape changes the repair. The valves, the spark switches and the wiring all sit in a shallow box. Spills run down the knob stems and land right on them. There is no oven below to pull for access. We work from the top and the front panel. The unit often stays in place.
The Viking rangetops we repair
- 5 Series gas, 30, 36 and 48 inches wide. Sealed burners at 15,000 BTU. Some models add one TruPower Plus burner at 18,500 BTU.
- 7 Series gas, 36 and 48 inches. Elevation burners reach 23,000 BTU in front. The rear has 15,000 BTU burners and one small 8,000 BTU burner.
- 5 Series induction and electric, 30 and 36 inches.
- Older 5 Series models that Viking has since dropped.
Spark faults behind the front panel
Every gas knob has a small switch on its valve stem. Turn the knob and the switch tells the spark module to fire. Viking calls the system SureSpark, and it can fire again if the flame drops out.
On a rangetop those switches sit in a row, inches below the burners. When one gets wet or greasy it shorts. Then the whole top clicks with no knob turned. We test the row and replace the bad switch. Often we advise doing the full set, since the others have seen the same spills.
No click at all is the other side of it. That means a dead module, a broken wire or no power. Check the outlet in the cabinet below. Rangetops plug in there, and things stored in that cabinet can knock the plug loose.
Flame trouble on sealed and Elevation burners
The 5 Series has a one-piece porcelain top with raised edges. Spills stay put. But burned sugar around a burner base can block the ports. The flame comes out in patches. Clean the ports with a pin, not a toothpick that can snap off.
On the 7 Series, the flame ports are brass and sit up high off the pan. They clog less. When a 23,000 BTU burner burns orange or makes a roaring sound, the air shutter or the orifice needs attention. After a switch from natural gas to propane, a missed orifice causes this on day one.
A burner that will not hold a low simmer needs its valve set. Viking puts a VariSimmer setting on every burner. We adjust the low flame at the valve stem with the knob off.
Knobs, bezels and knob lights
Knobs on a rangetop take a beating. The D-shaped socket inside the knob cracks and the knob spins free. That is a new knob, not a new valve. A knob that is stiff or gritty is the valve. Old grease in the valve dries out. We replace the valve instead of oiling it.
The 7 Series has dark chrome knobs with LED backlights. If one knob goes dark, the LED ring behind it has failed. If all go dark, we look at the power supply for the lights.
Induction and electric rangetops are a smaller group. These share the front knob layout but work very differently. Induction units need a magnetic pan. If the zone shuts off after a few minutes, a cooling fan may be blocked. Make sure the cabinet below has the air gap the install guide calls for. Electric rangetops fail one element or one switch at a time. For flush models with top controls, see Viking cooktop repair.
Fees, hours and the people we send
Our home diagnostic fee is $79. It goes away if you approve the repair. The rangetop quote is fixed, holds labor and parts, and reaches you before a knob comes off. Same-day appointments are common. We take calls and run visits 6 AM to 9 PM, seven days. Each tech is background checked and carries a license and insurance. Spark switches, modules and igniters are truck stock. You get a 30-day repair warranty on the repair and can book online.
A+ is family owned. We are an independent shop with no tie to Viking.
Keep it or replace it
We nearly always say keep it. The cutout in your counter and cabinets was made for this exact width and depth. A new unit from another maker may not fill the gap. The parts that fail are cheap next to stone work. The one case for a new rangetop is a cracked burner pan on a model with no parts left.
We repair rangetops across Washington D.C. See our D.C. service page. Rangetop repairs are also done for homes in Northern Virginia, Houston, greater Los Angeles and Chicago. Read more on the Viking service overview, or see range repair for other makes. If you have the full unit with an oven, go to Viking range repair. Before we come, clear out the cabinet under the rangetop. We need to reach the gas shutoff and the plug.
