A warming drawer is a simple machine, and that is good news for repairs. Thermador sells a 30 inch drawer with 2.2 cubic feet of space. It comes in stainless steel or with a custom panel to match your cabinets. It has four settings. They are high, medium, low and proof. The heat range runs from 100 to 190 degrees. Proof mode gives bread dough a warm, still place to rise.
Inside there are only a few working parts. There is a heating element, a control, a temperature sensor or thermostat and a safety limit. Then there are the rails and the door hardware. We carry most of those on the truck. See what else we fix on our Thermador appliance page.
Start with the light. If the indicator is dark, the drawer may have no power. Check the breaker. If the light is on and there is no heat, one of these has failed:
We test each with a meter. An element swap is a short job once the drawer is out of the cabinet.
Food that dries out on low means the drawer is running hot. Plates that are barely warm on high mean it is running cool. Both point to the part that reads the heat. When the sensor or thermostat drifts, the control gets bad information. A stuck relay can also leave the element on full time. That is one to fix soon. It wastes power and can warp the drawer liner.
One check is easy. Put an oven thermometer inside and set the drawer to medium. Give it 30 minutes. If the reading is far outside 100 to 190 degrees, call us.
The two Thermador drawers open in different ways. The stainless model is push to open. You press the front and it pops out, so it needs no handle. The custom panel model has SoftClose rails that pull the drawer shut gently. Thermador rates those ball bearing rails for up to 40 pounds.
A push latch that will not catch leaves the drawer ajar. Then heat leaks out the front. A rail with a lost bearing feels gritty or jams half way. Heavy stacks of plates speed that up. We replace latches and rails as a set, so both sides match.
It is made to hold hot food, not to cook cold food. Do not line it with foil. Foil traps heat against the floor and can trip the limit. Do not use it to heat the room or dry towels. Keep plastic wrap and paper out. And do not load more than the rails are rated to carry.
Here is how the money works. A tech comes to your home for $79 and finds the fault. Approve the drawer repair and the $79 never reaches your bill.
