What a Thermador freezer column is
You will not find a chest model or a garage upright with a Thermador badge. Its freezers are built-in columns in the Freedom Collection. They come 18, 24, 30 and 36 inches wide. Each one is a stand-alone freezer with its own cooling system. Most sit next to a fresh food column behind cabinet panels. If your trouble is on the fresh food side, go to Thermador refrigerator repair. This page covers only the freezer.
Soft food and a warm freezer column
Ice cream is the first thing to tell you. When it goes soft, the column is running warm. We check these parts, in this order:
- The door gasket. A gap lets in warm, damp air all day.
- The condenser. Dust on it traps heat that the freezer is trying to dump.
- The evaporator fan. It pushes cold air through the shelves. When it stops, only the back wall stays cold.
- The defrost heater and its sensor. A failed defrost lets white ice bury the coil until no air gets past.
- The control board and the temperature sensors that feed it.
A sealed system fault is the last thing we test for. That means a leak or a weak compressor. It is the costly one, so we rule out the rest first.
Frost on the back wall or around the door
Frost tells a story by where it sits. Frost near the door edge points to the gasket or a door that did not latch. Thermador columns have Open Door Assist. You push or pull and the door helps itself open. If that part acts up, the door may not close tight. Thick white frost across the back panel points to a failed defrost. A sheet of clear ice on the floor points to a blocked defrost drain.
Diamond Ice maker problems
Thermador freezer columns have a filtered ice maker. It makes a cube shape the brand calls Diamond Ice. Some 18 and 24 inch columns also put ice and water through the door.
Thermador's guide lists simple causes for low ice. A cube can jam the arm that measures the ice level. The ice scoop left in the bin can block the sensor. The bin may not be pushed all the way in. An old water filter slows the flow. Thermador says to change that filter every six months. A new or restarted unit also needs a day to start making ice. It can take three days to fill the bin.
If none of that helps, our tech meters the inlet valve and looks up the fill tube. That tube often has a plug of ice in it. So is an ice maker that has simply worn out. On door dispenser models we also check the chute flap and the auger motor.
Things to try before the visit
Look at the display for a warning and write it down. Make sure SuperFreeze is not the reason for a noise change. That mode drives the column to its lowest setting, and Thermador says it can run up to 54 hours. Check that no box is holding the door open. Keep the door shut as much as you can. A full freezer stays frozen longer than a half empty one. If food is starting to thaw, move it to a cooler with ice.
Freezer visit cost and timing
Thawing food sets the clock, so freezer calls jump the line for a visit that day. Someone answers from 6 AM through 9 PM, Saturday and Sunday as well. The home diagnostic fee is $79. It comes off when the repair goes ahead. Your quote is a fixed number with parts and labor in it. You approve it first. A+ is an independent, family owned outfit. The tech at your door is insured, holds a license and passed our background screen. Our 30-day repair warranty stands behind the freezer repair.
Repair or replace a Freedom freezer
A column is built into your cabinets and wears a custom panel. Swapping it out is a big project. Fans, sensors, gaskets, heaters and ice makers are all worth fixing. We only talk about replacing when the sealed system fails on an old column. Even then you get both prices side by side.
We service Thermador freezers in Houston and nearby cities. Our Texas service page has the list. More crews run in Illinois, Southern California, Virginia and the District. See all Thermador repairs or our general freezer repair page. One habit helps every freezer column. Wipe the door gasket with clear water now and then, and dry it well.
