Top load Maytag faults
Maytag is best known for top load washers. Here is what fails on them.
The lid lock comes first. Maytag's help pages list an F5 E2 code for it. It means the washer cannot lock the lid. Something may be in the way, or the lock has failed. Maytag suggests unplugging the washer for five minutes to reset it. If the code comes back, the lock needs replacing.
Next is the drive. A top loader that fills and then hums has a drive fault. The belt, the motor coupler or the shifter may be worn. A washer that agitates but will not spin often has a bad shifter or a clutch fault.
Then the suspension. Four rods hold the tub. When they wear, the tub bangs the cabinet in spin. The washer may stop and try to rebalance again and again.
Pet Pro washers
Pet Pro models have a filter that traps pet hair during the wash. It works well, but it must be emptied. A full Pet Pro filter slows the drain. Clothes come out dripping.
If the filter is clean and the tub still holds water, the drain pump is next. Hair, coins and small socks jam it. We pull the pump and clear it or replace it. Maytag also puts an Extra Power button on many washers. That button is a wash option for tough stains. It will not clear a drain fault.
Fill problems and the LF code
Maytag lists LF, or F8 E1, as a long fill code. The washer is taking too long to fill. Check that both taps are fully open. Check the hoses for kinks.
Maytag also notes that a drain hose pushed too far down the standpipe can cause it. Water siphons out as it fills. If all that is right, the inlet valve or its screens are blocked.
Front load Maytag faults
Front loaders have their own set.
- A torn door boot leaks at the front.
- A musty smell comes from water left in the boot fold.
- Too much soap brings a Sud or Sd message on the display.
- A roar in spin means the tub bearing is worn.
- The door lock fails and the cycle will not start.
Very old Neptune front loaders are hard to get parts for. We will tell you up front if yours is one.
What you can do first
- Close the lid firmly and clear anything near the lock.
- Unplug the washer for five minutes.
- Empty the Pet Pro filter.
- Use HE soap and less of it.
- Spread heavy items around the tub.
A visit from A+
Washer calls are booked daily between 6 AM and 9 PM, and we often arrive the same day. A test cycle comes first, and the tech reads any stored codes. The washer visit is $79 at a home, and we waive it with an approved repair. Your price is fixed before we start. It counts parts and labor. Maytag and Whirlpool share parts, so the truck often has the lock, pump or valve you need. Techs are background checked. They are also licensed and insured. We back the repair with a 30-day repair warranty. A+ is an independent repair company.
Is an older Maytag washer worth it
For most faults, yes. Lid locks, pumps, belts, valves and suspension rods are modest repairs. The close calls are a failed gearcase on a top loader or a tub bearing on a front loader. Those take many hours. We price them against a new washer and let you choose. A washer with a sound tub and a clean cabinet is almost always worth the part.
Texas homes can book on our Houston area appliance repair page. See washer repair and Maytag appliance repair for more. The other half of the pair is on the Maytag dryer repair page. We end each job by watching the lid lock click and the tub reach full spin.
