GE makes more kinds of ranges than most brands. There are freestanding ranges with the controls on a back panel. There are slide-in ranges with the knobs up front. Both come in gas and electric. GE also builds double oven ranges, with a small oven over a large one. GE Profile even has a dual fuel double oven model.
The badge can say GE, GE Profile, Café or Hotpoint. One company makes them all, so many parts cross over. That helps us stock the truck. Our General Electric brand page has more on the family.
A GE gas burner that clicks without end is a common call. Each knob has a small switch behind it. When a pot boils over, water gets into the switch. It then tells the spark module to fire nonstop. Sometimes it dries out in a day. If not, the switch set needs replacing.
A burner with no flame and no click is a separate fault. The spark tip may be cracked or coated with food. The burner head may be clogged. If every burner is dead, the spark module has failed or the range has no power.
On a glass top GE range, each element has its own switch. We check these parts:
An element that stays on full no matter where the knob sits is a stuck switch. Turn off the breaker until it is fixed.
The oven below the burners has its own faults. In gas models, a weak igniter is the top cause of a cold oven. In electric models it is a burned bake element. Both show up as a long or failed preheat. Air Fry and convection modes need the rear fan. If those modes cook unevenly and plain bake is fine, the fan motor is suspect. We go deeper on codes and sensors on our GE oven repair page.
A touch pad with some dead keys usually needs a new key panel. If the whole display is dark, we test the board and its power. GE ranges can also show Bad Line. GE says that means power is present but the wiring is wrong. It tends to show up right after a new install or a cord change. An electrician or the installer should fix the outlet wiring.
Pull the burner caps and heads once they are cool. Clean the ports with a toothbrush and dry it all well. Set the caps back flat. For electric, flip the breaker off and on. Check that the oven is not in lock mode. If you smell gas and nothing is lit, open a window and call the gas company.
A tech looks at the range and gives you a firm price. That price has labor and parts in it and does not change. A range diagnostic is $79 at a house. Saying yes to the repair cancels it. Booking is open online and by phone, 6 AM until 9 PM, weekends as well. Most range calls are handled the same day. A+ is an independent, family run business. Range techs are insured, licensed and background checked.
In most cases, yes. Igniters, switches, elements and sensors are low-cost parts. GE parts are easy to get. Two things change our answer. One is a cracked glass top. The other is a failed board that GE no longer makes. A new glass top can cost close to a new basic range.
