Gaggenau builds its refrigerators to hide in the cabinets. The Vario refrigerator column is fresh food only. The fridge-freezer combination adds a freezer drawer at the bottom. The newest models are in the Expressive series. The 400 and 200 series came before and are still in many homes.
Here is what Gaggenau lists on a current column. The main space is set from 35 to 46 degrees. Below it are two fresh climate drawers with humidity control and one chilled drawer. Those drawers can be set from 30 to 36 degrees. The inside is dark stainless steel with hidden LED light bars. Two charcoal filters clean the air. There is a water dispenser inside and a touch display. Some fridge-freezers even have cameras to track food.

Two zones in one cabinet means air has to be shared out. A fan and a set of flaps send cold air where it is needed. If the top is warm and the drawers are cold, the air is not getting up. The fan may be weak or a flap may be stuck. If the drawers freeze the lettuce, a flap is stuck open or a sensor reads wrong.
When the whole column is warm, we look wider. Is the grille at the base clear? A column packed tight into cabinets can overheat if its vents are blocked. Is the coil iced over from a failed defrost? Is the compressor running? We test in that order.
These drawers are why people buy the column. Each one has its own program for fruit, greens or meat. Wet, slimy greens mean the humidity setting is too high or the seal on the drawer is off. Dry, limp greens mean the reverse. Check the program first. A drawer that will not hold its setting has a sensor or control fault. The drawers ride on full slides with a soft close. A slide that binds keeps the drawer from sealing.
The column needs a cold water line. Gaggenau calls for a shut-off valve you can reach next to the unit. A slow dispenser often means a used-up filter. No water at all points at the inlet valve or a closed shut-off. Water on the floor can come from the supply fitting or from a blocked defrost drain. We trace it before we touch a part.
Handleless columns use an opening assist. You push the panel and the door moves out. If it stops, the door is hard to open. Gaggenau notes that in rest mode the door only opens with a handle. So check the settings before you assume a fault.
A door that does not seal shows up as sweat on the back wall and a fan that never rests. The cause can be a torn gasket, a drawer left out a half inch, or a panel that is too heavy for the hinge setting.
The column warns you when the door is open too long or when it finds a fault. The touch display also has short guides for upkeep. Read what it says and take a photo. That photo helps us bring the right part.
A warm Gaggenau refrigerator is urgent, and we aim for the same day. The Vario column line is staffed 6 AM to 9 PM for column owners, seven days. For a home the column diagnostic is $79. With an approved repair it is waived. A fixed price covering parts and labor is quoted, and you approve it first. Column techs are insured and licensed and have passed background checks. A 30-day repair warranty comes with the refrigerator repair. A+ is an independent company.
A Vario column is fixed to the cabinets and wears a custom panel. Swapping brands means a new niche. Fans, flaps, sensors, valves and gaskets are all worth doing. Both options get priced only if the compressor in an old unit has failed. Certain parts come from abroad, so we book the return visit before we go.
