The Vario freezer column
Gaggenau sells its freezers as Vario columns. A column is a tall built-in unit that hides behind a cabinet panel. It can stand alone or next to a fridge or wine column. The current line is called the Expressive series. Older ones are the Vario 400 and 200 series.
Gaggenau lists these features on the current freezer. The inside is dark brushed stainless steel. Cold air is spread by a system it calls Multi-Flow Air. The set range is minus 11 to 3 degrees, with a fast freeze mode. Defrost is automatic. The door has an opening assist, so you can push it or pull it lightly. Models with an ice maker connect to a fixed water line. Gaggenau says the ice maker makes about 5 pounds a day.
This page is about the freezer only. Fresh food columns are on our Gaggenau refrigerator repair page.
Freezer is warming up
The column has an alarm for an open door or a fault. If it sounds, note the reading on the display. Then leave the door closed. A packed Vario freezer stays cold for hours when nobody opens it.
We check the fans first. One fan moves air over the cold coil inside. Another cools the compressor area behind the base grille. If the inside fan stops, the top shelves thaw first. If the base grille is blocked, the whole system runs hot and cools poorly. Dust, a rug or a toe-kick panel cut too tight can do it.
A freezer works much harder than a fridge. It has to pull the box far below zero. A small loss of refrigerant shows up here before anywhere else. Ice cream goes soft while meat still feels hard. If the fans and defrost test fine, we check the sealed system and the compressor.
Frost inside a Vario freezer
A Vario freezer clears its coil with a heater that runs on a schedule. When that heater or its sensor quits, ice packs the coil solid. Airflow stops and the column warms. You may see frost on the back panel.
Frost along a Vario door edge has another cause. Kitchen air is slipping in. Look at the door gasket for a tear or a gap. An extra heavy cabinet panel may also drag the door out of line. Gaggenau gives a weight limit for the panel. We adjust the hinges so the gasket seals all the way around.
Ice maker stopped
The ice maker can be turned off on its own at the display. Check that first. Next is the water supply. The shut-off valve must be open. The water filter sits in the vent grille area. The display shows when it is used up. A clogged filter slows the fill and makes small or hollow cubes.
With good water and still no ice, the fill valve and the ice maker get tested. Sometimes the fill tube has frozen shut. We thaw the tube and look for the reason.
Door will not open easily or will not stay shut
The opening assist is a powered part. If it fails, the door feels stuck because of the suction inside. Pull gently on the handle or panel edge. Do not pry. We test the assist unit and its sensor.
What to do while you wait
- Keep the door closed as much as you can.
- Clear the grille at the base.
- Write down the display reading.
- Move costly food to a cooler with ice if the reading climbs.
Price and response time
A thawing Gaggenau freezer gets priority, and most are seen the same day. Vario freezer calls are picked up starting 6 AM, ending 9 PM, seven days. The freezer diagnostic for a home runs $79. It is waived once the repair is approved. A fixed price with parts and labor is given before we begin. Licensed, insured Vario freezer techs, all background checked, do the freezer work. The freezer repair has our 30-day repair warranty. A+ is an independent company.
Repair is the right call for most Vario columns. The niche and the panel were built to its exact size. Fans, heaters, sensors, valves and gaskets are fair repairs. A sealed system repair costs more, and we price it against a new column for you.
We fix Gaggenau freezers in Chicago and the North Shore. Column owners in Houston and Los Angeles are covered as well. So are D.C. and Virginia. See our Gaggenau appliance repair page and the wider freezer repair page. After any thaw, check the ice bin. Melted cubes freeze into one block and jam the ice maker.
