How Gaggenau cooktops are built
Gaggenau sells cooktops in the 400 series and the 200 series. Many carry the Vario name. Vario units are modules. You pick a gas unit, an induction unit or another type and set them side by side. A metal strip joins each pair. They can sit on top of the counter or flush with it.
The 36 inch Vario 400 gas cooktop has five multi-ring burners. The center one is a three-ring wok burner. Gaggenau rates the whole top at 59,700 BTU. The gas valves are fully electronic, with 12 power levels and a simmer setting. The knobs are solid steel with a lit ring.
On the induction side, the star is the full surface cooktop. The whole 36 inch glass is one cooking zone. It takes up to six pans, placed anywhere. A color touch screen runs it. There are also Vario induction and flex induction modules. We repair all of these as part of our Gaggenau service.
Gas module sparks but will not light
Start with the igniter. A film of grease or a spill can short the spark. Clean and dry the burner parts and try again. Check that each ring of the burner sits in its place.
These tops watch the flame with a sensor. If the flame goes out, the control tries to light it again by itself. A burner that lights, drops and sparks over and over has a sensor that cannot see the flame. Dirt is one cause. A failing sensor or control is the other. Because the valves are electronic, a fault in the control can stop gas to one burner while the rest work.
Gas cooktop is fully dead
Gaggenau states that this cooktop will not run without power. So a dead gas top is often an electric fault. Check the breaker and the outlet first. If power is good, we test the control unit under the counter.
Induction zone shows a pan warning
Induction only works with iron or magnetic steel pans. Flat bottoms work best. Test the pan with a magnet. If a good pan is rejected in one spot only, the coil or power board under that spot has failed. On the full surface model there are many small coils under the glass. One bad group leaves a cold patch.
A screen that is dark or does not answer touch is a separate fault. We test the display and its power supply. Water under the glass edge on a flush install can also cause trouble. The seal around a flush top must be whole.
One module fails, the rest keep working
This is the upside of the Vario design. Each module is its own appliance. A failed induction unit does not stop the gas unit next to it. It also means we can pull one module for repair and leave the rest in place. We take care with the joining strip and the counter edge when we lift it.
What owners can check
- Reset the breaker for the cooktop.
- Dry and reseat the burner rings and caps.
- Try a second pan you know is magnetic.
- Look for a child lock symbol on the display.
Visit cost and schedule
A Gaggenau cooktop diagnostic costs $79 for a home. Approve the Vario repair and the $79 is waived. The fixed Vario price, with parts and labor, is named before a module is lifted. Vario calls are mostly handled the same day. We answer 6 AM to 9 PM, Monday to Sunday, and the website books visits too. Vario repairs are done by licensed, insured Vario techs with background checks passed. The Vario repair has a 30-day repair warranty. A+ stays independent, with no Gaggenau tie.
A Gaggenau cooktop is set into stone that was cut for it. A flush install has a groove milled to the exact size. No other brand will drop into that cut. So we repair unless the glass is broken and the model is long out of production. Some parts ship from overseas stock. We set the return visit before we leave.
We fix Gaggenau cooktops in Northern Virginia and D.C. Vario owners in Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston can book too. Other makes are on the stove repair page. The oven below is a separate unit, covered under Gaggenau oven repair. One caution from Gaggenau itself: its wok ring pan is not made for the full surface induction top.
