Gas, dual fuel and induction ranges
A range is a cooktop and an oven in one body. Fisher and Paykel sells three fuel setups. A gas range burns gas on top and in the oven. A dual fuel range has gas burners over an electric oven. An induction range heats pans with coils under glass and bakes with electric heat.
The styles are Professional, Classic and Contemporary. Widths we see most are 30, 36 and 48 inches. The 48 inch hybrid is the odd one. It has gas burners, induction zones and two convection ovens with self-clean. That is three systems to test in one call. For the full brand list, visit our Fisher and Paykel repair page.
Burners that will not light
Next to each gas burner sits a small ceramic spark tip. When you turn the dial, a module fires all the tips at once. If one burner clicks but stays out, the fault is local. The cap may sit crooked, or a spill has clogged the ports. A cracked tip sends the spark into the metal base. Fisher and Paykel tells owners to dry and refit the burner parts first.
If no burner sparks at all, we look further back. The spark module may be dead, or the range has lost power. A burner that keeps clicking after it lights often has a wet switch behind the dial.
An oven that runs cold or slow
On a gas range, the oven igniter does two jobs. It lights the gas, and it proves there is enough heat to open the valve. A tired igniter glows but never lets gas through. Preheat then takes forever or never ends.
On dual fuel and induction ranges the oven is electric. There we check these parts:
- The bake element under the oven floor.
- The broil element at the top.
- The fan and ring element at the back wall.
- The heat sensor and the oven control board.
Induction range alerts
The brand's induction ranges show alert codes on the cooktop display. Many of them are about the pan, not the range. A pan that is too small or not magnetic will set one off. Others warn that the glass or the boards below are too hot. If an alert comes back with good pans and a cool top, call us. A power board or a cooling fan is the likely cause.
Checks that are safe to do
Let the range cool. Lift the grates and caps, wash them and dry them fully. Put every cap back and press it down flat. Check that the range is plugged in, since gas models still need power to spark. Reset the breaker for electric and induction models. A gas smell with every dial off means get outside and ring the gas utility before anyone else.
Range visit price and process
A diagnostic trip to a home is $79. Accept the range quote and that $79 is waived. We fix the figure in advance, so the total does not creep. Parts and labor are both in it. Techs bring common igniters, elements and switches with them. Range techs are licensed and insured, and none skips the background check. A+ is an independent shop, owned by one family. We take range jobs from 6 AM until 9 PM, Sundays included.
Deciding on an older range
A Professional range is a heavy, costly piece. It is often the center of the kitchen layout. An igniter, a valve, an element or a hinge is a small bill next to a new one. We lean toward replacing when the oven cavity has rusted through. We also say so when several boards are gone on an old induction model.
Range owners around Los Angeles will find their town on the California appliance repair page. Chicago, Northern Virginia, Houston and D.C. homes are on our routes too. If yours is a drop-in top with no oven below, see Fisher and Paykel cooktop repair. Other makes are on our range repair page. One range-only tip. After a big boil-over, run the oven light check too, since liquid can run down past the burners into the door.
