Electrolux sells a tall single-door freezer. It holds 19 cubic feet. There is a matching single-door refrigerator. A pairing kit joins the two so they look like one wide built-in.
The other freezers we see are part of a fridge. French door models have a freezer drawer at the bottom. That drawer has its own fan, coil and defrost parts. This page covers both kinds. Fresh food problems are on our Electrolux refrigerator repair page.
You hear it hum. The light works. But the ice cream is soup. The freezer is making some cold, just not enough.
We look at air flow first. A fan behind the back panel blows air across the cooling coil. If that fan stops, the coil gets cold but the shelves do not. Open the door and listen. The fan should start when you press the door switch. Silence means a dead fan motor or ice around the blade.
Next is the condenser. It is the warm coil at the bottom or back. Dust on it traps heat. The compressor runs nonstop and still falls behind. A good cleaning can bring the temperature back down.
A frost-free freezer melts its own frost. A heater warms the coil a few times each day. A small sensor ends the melt when the ice is gone. The control tells it when to start.
If any of the three fails, frost builds. First you see a white patch on the back panel. Then the fan starts to tick against ice. Then the air stops and the food thaws. We remove the panel, melt the ice and test each defrost part. The fix is usually one part.
Frost near the door is a different thing. That is a seal problem, covered below.
A tall freezer door is heavy and gets opened a lot. The gasket can tear at the corners or go stiff. Warm air leaks in and turns to frost along the door edge.
Shut a strip of paper in the door. Pull it out. You should feel a firm drag all the way around. A loose spot means a weak gasket or a door that has dropped. When two units are joined by a pairing kit, a shift in one can rub the other. We level both and reset the hinges.
A door alarm that keeps beeping can be the same leak. It can also be a bad door switch or a failed sensor.
A click every few minutes, then silence, means the compressor keeps failing to start. The start relay plugs onto the compressor's side. It is small. It gives the motor a kick. When it burns out, the compressor cannot get going. A relay is a modest repair.
If the relay is good and the compressor still will not run, the news is worse. A dead compressor is a large job. So is a sealed system leak. We test before we say it.
