No heat in an electric Electrolux dryer

The drum turns and the timer counts down. The clothes come out cold and wet. On an electric model, three parts cause most of this.

• The heating element. It is a coil of wire that glows. When the coil breaks, there is no heat.
• The thermal fuse. It blows once if the dryer overheats. It does not reset.
• The high limit switch. It cuts power to the element when the air gets too hot.

We test all three with a meter. A blown fuse is a clue, not the whole answer. Something made the dryer run hot. That is nearly always a blocked vent. If we change the fuse and skip the vent, the new fuse blows too.

Check one more thing. An electric dryer uses two breakers tied together. If one trips, the drum still spins but the heat is gone.

No heat in a gas model

A gas dryer lights a small burner. An igniter glows, a valve opens and a flame heats the air. A flame sensor watches it all.

When the igniter cracks, nothing lights. When the valve coils get weak, the dryer heats once and then stops. The first load is warm and the rest is cold. That pattern is a strong sign of bad coils. We change them as a set.

Drying takes too long

Electrolux dryers decide when to stop by feel. The LuxCare Dry system uses a moisture sensor in the drum. Two metal bars touch the wet clothes as they tumble. When the clothes feel dry, the cycle ends.

Fabric softener sheets coat those bars with a film. The sensor then reads dry too soon. The cycle quits with damp clothes. A cloth with rubbing alcohol takes the film off. It takes a minute.

The vent is the other cause. A long, crushed or lint-packed vent traps wet air in the drum. The dryer runs hot and the clothes stay damp. Go outside and feel the air at the wall cap. It should blow strong and warm.

Thumps, squeals and scraping

The drum rides on rollers at the back. It slides on glides at the front. A belt wraps around it and runs to the motor. A spring pulley keeps the belt tight.

A steady thump is a flat or worn roller. A high squeal is often the pulley. A scrape means the front glides have worn through to metal. A humming motor with a drum that will not move means a broken belt. We open the cabinet and check the whole set. Replacing all the worn parts at once saves a second visit.

Steam cycles that stop working

Many of these dryers have Perfect Steam. There is also an Instant Refresh cycle that Electrolux says takes 10 minutes. Steam models connect to the cold water line. If the steam stops, check that the water valve at the wall is on. Next on our list are the steam inlet valve and the spray nozzle. Hard water can clog the nozzle.

Dryer will not start at all

Press start and nothing happens. We check the door switch first. The dryer will not run if it thinks the door is open. Next is the thermal fuse on some models, then the start circuit and the control board. A dead display with good power at the outlet points to the board.

Five habits keep most dryers out of trouble.

• Clean the lint screen before every load.
• Wash the screen with soap a few times a year.
• Reset both dryer breakers.
• Slide the dryer forward and check that the vent hose is not flat.
• Wipe the moisture sensor bars.
