What a DCS cooktop is, and what it is called now
DCS built drop-in gas cooktops for indoor kitchens for many years. The CDV2 series is the one we meet most. It came in 30 and 36 inch widths with four or five burners. Today DCS sells outdoor gear. Its indoor cooking line moved under the Fisher and Paykel Professional name. Your cooktop still works the same way, and parts still exist for many models. For more on the brand, see our DCS appliance repair page.
A cooktop drops into the counter and has no oven below it. If yours has an oven, you want DCS range repair instead.
How the Dual Flow burner is put together
Each burner is sealed to the top, so spills stay on the surface. A brass flame spreader sits on the burner base. A cap rests on top of that. Small notches around the spreader shape the flame. A white ceramic igniter stands beside it and throws the spark. The burner also watches its own flame. If a draft blows it out, the igniter fires again without you touching the knob. Every knob has a low setting marked SIM for a gentle simmer.
Burner faults we fix most on these cooktops
- One burner will not light. The igniter is wet, dirty or cracked, or the spreader sits crooked.
- No click at all. If the house has power, we test the spark module and the knob switch.
- Clicking that never stops. Water or grease on an igniter is the usual cause. A shorted switch under a knob comes next.
- Flame on only part of the ring. Burnt food has plugged the notches in the spreader.
- A tall, yellow or sooty flame. The gas setup is wrong for your fuel. Stop using that burner.
- A knob that turns stiff or feels loose. The valve stem is worn or gummed up.
Things to try before you book
Let the cooktop cool first. Lift the grate, the cap and the brass spreader off the problem burner. Scrub them in a sink of warm suds, then towel each one dry. Clear each notch with a wooden toothpick. Wipe the igniter tip with a dry cloth. Set the parts back so they sit flat and do not rock.
After a boilover, give the burner an hour to dry out. Clicking often stops once the water is gone. In a power cut you can still light a burner with a match. A yellow flame is not a cleaning job. Leave that burner off until a tech checks the gas setup.
What the repair visit looks like
The family behind A+ still runs it. The shop is independent, with no link to DCS. The techs we send hold a license, carry insurance and were background checked at hiring. They test the spark system, each valve and the gas pressure at the cooktop. The home diagnostic is $79. You get one fixed price, parts and labor, before we start. Say yes and the $79 comes off the bill. Igniters and switches for common models ride on the truck. The finished repair carries a 30-day repair warranty.
Fixing an older DCS cooktop or buying new
These cooktops are heavy stainless steel with brass and cast iron parts. The body outlasts the small parts by many years. An igniter, a switch set or a spark module is a fair repair on a sound unit. Buying new also means matching the cutout in your stone counter. That work can cost more than the cooktop itself. We lean toward a new unit when several gas valves leak at once. We say the same if a key part has left production. You will know which case you have before you spend on parts.
Where we fix DCS cooktops
We see plenty of DCS kitchens in Fairfax, Arlington and Loudoun County. The towns are listed on our Northern Virginia service page. Our routes also take in Houston, the L.A. basin, Chicagoland and the District. Doors open at 6 AM and we run until 9 PM, all seven days. Most calls get a same-day visit, and you can book online. If the same kitchen has a DCS oven in the wall, read our DCS wall oven repair page too. Tell us if your cooktop runs on propane. LP burners make a small pop a few seconds after shutoff, and that is normal.
