Fridge warm while the freezer stays cold
This is the classic Bosch fridge call. The freezer holds its cold and the milk goes bad. On most models, the cause is frost on the evaporator coil. The defrost heater or its sensor has quit. Ice builds up until air cannot pass.
A stopped evaporator fan gives the same result. The coil is cold, but nothing moves that cold to the shelves. We pull the back panel, look at the frost pattern and test the fan, heater and sensor.
Bosch builds some models with a dual compressor and dual evaporator. Each section has its own cooling loop. On those, a warm fridge with a cold freezer can also mean the fridge side loop has a fault of its own.
Bosch refrigerator lines we service
Bosch sells French door and bottom freezer models that stand free. It also sells built-in units under the Benchmark name. The built-in single door models come 18 and 30 inches wide. The free-standing models are in the 500 Series and the 800 Series, in standard or counter depth.
Names you may see on the door or drawers include VitaFreshPro, FarmFresh and MultiAirFlow. VitaFreshPro drawers let you set the cold and the damp for what you store. MultiAirFlow is the fan system that spreads cold air. Learn more about the brand on our Bosch appliance repair page.
Ice maker and water line faults
A lack of ice is the second most common complaint. Bosch points to one easy cause. If the ice bin is not seated and lined up, the ice maker will not run. Push it in until it stops.
After that, think about water. Bosch says to change the water filter every six months, or when the fridge asks. An old filter slows the flow, and cubes come out small or hollow. A frozen fill tube or a weak inlet valve will stop ice fully. We thaw the tube, test the valve and check the ice maker module.
Water on the floor often comes from the filter housing or a loose line at the back. Water inside, under the drawers, comes from a clogged defrost drain.
Sounds a Bosch fridge should not make
A buzz that starts and stops every few minutes can be a compressor that fails to start. A steady rattle from the back is often the condenser fan hitting dust or a wire. A chirp from inside the freezer is the evaporator fan rubbing on ice. Each sound points to a different part, so tell us where it comes from.
Before you pick up the phone
Bosch gives three checks for a fridge that is not cooling. We agree with all three.
- Open the door. If the light comes on, the fridge has power.
- Look at the set temperature. It can get bumped when you clean.
- Clear the air vents at the back of the shelves. A big box can block them.
We would add two more. Make sure the doors seal all the way around. And vacuum the grille at the base if your model has one.
How the appointment works and what you pay
Book online, or call us any time from 6 AM until 9 PM. A warm fridge cannot sit, so it goes on the same-day list when we can. Keep the doors shut until we get there.
Finding the fault in a home costs $79. That fee goes away once you approve the repair. The tech writes up a fixed price that counts labor and every part. You sign off before he begins. He carries fans, defrost parts and valves for common Bosch models. He is licensed, insured and background checked. His work has a 30-day repair warranty.
Is the repair worth it on a Bosch
For fans, defrost parts, ice makers, valves and door gaskets, yes. Those are fair repairs on any Bosch. A built-in Benchmark is worth fixing even when the job is large. It costs a lot to replace and the cabinets are built around it.
A failed compressor on an older 500 Series is the hard case. We price the sealed system work and let you weigh it against a new unit.
Our company is family owned and independent. We fix Bosch refrigerators around Houston, which our Texas page maps out. Owners in Chicago, D.C., Los Angeles and Northern Virginia can book us too. Other brands sit on refrigerator repair. If the kitchen has more Bosch in it, see Bosch range repair as well. One last thing for counter depth owners. Leave the gap at the top and back open, since that is where the heat gets out.
