Here we mean the hood you can see above the range. Wolf makes Pro wall hoods in a deep, heavy style. It also makes cooktop wall hoods, cooktop island hoods and a low profile hood. A Wolf hood shell ships without a blower. The buyer picks one. An internal blower sits inside the hood. Wolf lists internal sizes from 300 to 800 CFM. CFM is how much air moves each minute. An in-line blower sits in the duct run. A remote blower sits outside on the roof or wall. This matters for repair. A dead internal blower is fixed from the kitchen. A dead remote one means a trip to the roof.
Start with the easy causes Wolf names. The breaker may have tripped. The blower plug inside the hood shell may have come loose. A control knob may be broken. After those, we test the blower motor. A motor that hums but does not spin has often lost its capacitor. A motor that grinds has worn bearings. Grease is hard on both.
Weak pull with a healthy motor is an air path problem. Baffle filters packed with grease choke the hood. So does a damper flap stuck shut. We check the flap and the first stretch of duct.
Pro hoods use bulbs you can swap. Some Pro hoods also carry heat lamps to keep plates warm. If a new bulb does not light, the socket or the light switch has failed. Newer hoods use LED lights. Wolf says its LED lighting is not an owner job. We test the LED driver and the board, then replace what failed.
This one worries people, but it is often normal. Many Wolf hoods have a heat sensor. When the air under the hood gets hot, the sensor starts the blower. It can also push the speed up. Wolf gives about 200 degrees as the trigger point. So a hood that starts during a hard sear is doing its job. A hood that starts in a cold kitchen is not. Then we test the sensor and the control.
A metal tapping sound on windy days is the damper. Wind is pushing the flap open and shut. That is a duct fix, not a motor fault.
Testing a Wolf hood in a home is a $79 charge. Give the hood fix your OK and the $79 is dropped. Your fixed quote counts labor and parts, and you hear it before a tool is lifted. Common switches and capacitors are stocked on the truck. A warranty backs the hood repair.
Is an old Wolf hood worth fixing? Almost always, yes. The shell is thick stainless steel with no moving parts. What fails is small: a motor, a switch, a light driver. A new hood means new duct fittings and maybe new tile or cabinet work. Replace only if the shell is badly dented or the blower model is no longer made.
