Most Whirlpool dishwashers have no screen. They talk through a blinking light on the front. The pattern has two parts. Count the first run of quick flashes. That is the F number. After a short pause, count the second run. That is the E number. Then there is a long pause and it starts over. Seven flashes, a pause, then one flash means F7 E1. Whirlpool lists a few common ones. F9 E1 is a slow drain. F8 E4 means water was found in the drip tray under the tub. F7 E2 is a wash motor fault. Write the two numbers down for us.
A pool of dirty water after the cycle is the classic Whirlpool dishwasher complaint. Start with the filter. On many models it is a cup and a flat screen in the tub floor. Turn the cup a quarter turn and lift both out. Rinse them under the tap. Whirlpool also points to the sink side. Look for a bend in the drain hose. Run the disposal to clear it. If the disposal is new, the knockout plug may still be inside its inlet. Once those are ruled out, we test the drain pump. A pump jammed by a bone chip or glass will hum and move nothing.
A gritty film on glasses means the wash water was not moving or was not clean. A clogged filter lets old food swirl back onto dishes. Blocked spray arm holes cut the pressure. Pull the lower arm and rinse it out. If the arms do not spin at all, the wash motor may be weak or seized. That is when the F7 E2 pattern shows up. Water that is not hot enough will leave soap behind. Let the sink tap run hot first, then start the Whirlpool.
Whirlpool puts a tray under the tub with a sensor in it. When water lands there, the machine stops and may run the drain pump. The leak itself can be small. A door gasket with a nick will do it. So will a loose clamp on the pump or a cracked fill hose. Extra soap, or hand soap by mistake, fills a Whirlpool with suds that spill over inside. We find the source, fix it and dry the tray so the sensor resets.
Check the simple things first. Is the door latched with a click? Is the control lock light on? Hold the lock button for a few seconds to clear it. Is the breaker on? Whirlpool suggests a reset too. Cut power to the Whirlpool for 30 seconds, then restore it. If the panel is still dead, the door latch switch, the fuse on the board or the board itself may have failed.
