Sub-Zero builds freezers in several forms. There are tall freezer columns that stand alone or pair with a fridge column. There are side-by-side units with a tall freezer section. There are over-and-under models with a freezer drawer at the bottom. These come in the Classic, Designer and PRO series. We also fix many older built-ins that are still running.
All of them share one idea. Sub-Zero calls it dual refrigeration. The freezer and the fridge each have their own cooling, and the air never mixes. For a repair tech, that is good news. A freezer fault stays on the freezer side. We do not have to hunt through the whole unit.
When a Sub-Zero freezer warms up, we work from the cheap causes to the costly ones.
Listen and feel before you call. Is the compressor humming? Is there air moving inside when you press the door switch? Is the grille warm? Those three answers help us load the truck.
Light frost near the door points to the gasket. Run your hand along it and look for splits at the corners. Heavy frost on the back wall points to the defrost system. If the heater does not fire, ice grows across the Sub-Zero coil and chokes the air. The freezer then warms from the top down.
A slab of ice, or water, on the Sub-Zero freezer floor is a drain fault. Melt water from defrost should run out a small drain to a pan. When the drain freezes shut, the water has nowhere to go. We thaw it, clear it and find out why it froze.
The ice maker lives in the freezer, so we cover it here. No ice often comes down to water. The inlet valve may have failed. The fill tube may be frozen solid. The house filter or supply line may be clogged. If water is getting in and still no cubes drop, the ice maker module is worn. Check one thing first. Look at the control panel and confirm the Sub-Zero ice maker is set to on. It gets turned off by mistake more than you would think.
A Sub-Zero freezer diagnostic is $79 at a home. Approve the freezer fix and the $79 is not charged. Your tech takes the model and serial number first. Then come temp readings, fan checks and an amp test on the compressor. The freezer quote is a set figure, given ahead of the work, with labor and parts in it. A+ is independent. We are not tied to Sub-Zero or any maker. Each freezer tech is licensed and insured and cleared our screening. Freezer repairs are under warranty.
Most of the time it is. A built-in freezer fills an opening cut for it and wears panels made for it. Fans, heaters, valves, gaskets and boards all cost much less than a refit. The hard case is a sealed system fault on a very old unit. We will price it and tell you how the rest of the freezer looks. If the liner is cracked or the cabinet is rusting, we will say so.
