The TC5 is the old-school machine. A motor drives a belt. The belt turns a transmission, and the transmission swings the agitator. It is simple and strong, and it wears in known ways.
If the motor runs and the agitator sits still, the belt has slipped or snapped. A burning rubber smell backs that up. If the washer growls or whines as it agitates, the transmission is worn. If it fills and then does nothing, the lid switch may have failed. There is no lock, but the washer still needs to know the lid is down before it spins.
Oil spots under a TC5 mean a transmission seal is leaking. Catch that early. A dry transmission does not last.
TR washers move clothes by turning the tub itself. There is more electronics here. A control board tells the motor what to do, and a lock holds the lid during spin.
The common TR call is a lid that will not release, or a washer that stops with the lock light blinking. The lock itself wears out. So does the wiring to it, which flexes each time the lid opens. A washer that fills and sits may have a motor control fault. We test the lid lock, the motor control and the main board in turn.
Water on the floor in front of an FF7 usually comes from the door boot. A bra wire or a coin can slice the rubber. Pull the folds apart and look. Mold in the folds does not leak, but it smells. Dry the FF7 boot with a rag when laundry day ends, and prop the FF7 door ajar.
An FF7 that will not drain has a blocked pump. One that bangs on spin with a normal load may have a worn shock. A roar at high spin means bearings. The FF7 tries hard to balance a load, so one that gives up and stops is telling you something is worn.
Slow fill or no fill points to the inlet valve or to clogged screens in the hose ends. Hot and cold swapped means the hoses were crossed at install. A washer that will not drain often has a small item stuck in the pump. Coins and hair ties are the usual finds.
A washer that walks needs its feet leveled. Set a level on the top, adjust the front feet and lock the nuts. On a wood floor, a sheet of plywood under both machines helps a lot.
