The SKS freezers we work on
SKS does not sell a chest freezer or a garage upright. Its freezer is the integrated column. It comes 18, 24 or 30 inches wide. You can get it in stainless steel or panel ready, so it matches the cabinets. Most owners pair it with a fridge column next to it. Inside, the walls are glass and metal, which hold cold well. Each column has an ice maker with a clear bin you can lift out. The column links to the ThinQ app over Wi-Fi.
Food going soft in the column
A freezer has one job, and it is a hard one. It has to hold near zero all day. When ice cream turns soft, we start with the evaporator fan. That SKS fan pulls cold off the coil and sends it across the shelves. When it stops, the SKS coil gets icy while the food warms. Next the SKS rear panel comes off so we can see the coil. A coil buried in white frost means the defrost system quit. The heater, the sensor or the control can be at fault. If the coil is bare and only part of it is cold, the sealed system is low. That is the serious one.
Frost on the walls and food
Frost that builds near the door comes from warm air leaking in. On a column, the door carries a heavy panel. If the hinges sag, the gasket stops sealing at the top corner. Shut the SKS door on a thin strip of paper. If the strip slides out with no pull, that spot is leaking. Food pushed against the door can hold it open a hair as well. We adjust the hinges or replace the gasket.
Ice maker faults
No ice at all often traces to the water side. The fill tube can freeze shut. The inlet valve can fail or clog. Look in the SKS settings to see that ice making is turned on. Also check that the bin is pushed all the way back. Tiny or hollow SKS cubes mean the water flow is weak. A maker that fills but never dumps has a bad motor or sensor. We test it in place.
Water on the floor by the column
A freezer melts its own frost a few times a day. That melt water leaves through a drain and lands in an SKS pan underneath. If the drain freezes shut, water pools inside and then leaks out the front. We clear the drain and check the heater that keeps it open. A leak at the back is more often the water line to the ice maker.
Before you call us
- Make sure the toe grille at the bottom is not blocked by a rug.
- Check the set point in the app or on the panel.
- Look for a bag or box stopping the door.
- If an alarm sounds, note what the display says.
- Keep the door shut. A full freezer stays cold for many hours if you leave it closed.
Cost, timing and the repair or replace question
An SKS freezer visit costs $79 for the diagnostic at a home. Approve the SKS freezer fix and the $79 is waived. You get a fixed SKS freezer price up front, labor and parts counted. SKS freezer slots open at 6 AM, the last freezer slot is 9 PM, weekday or weekend, and most SKS freezer jobs get a same-day visit. A+ is an independent company. The SKS freezer tech holds a license, has insurance and passed a background check, and repairs carry a 30-day repair warranty. As for replacing, SKS launched in 2018, so these columns are young. The cabinet opening is cut for this exact unit. A fan, heater, gasket or ice maker is an easy yes. For a sealed system fault, check your factory coverage first, then ask us for a price. We fix SKS freezers in the District, per our Washington D.C. page. SKS freezer owners in Northern Virginia and Chicago can book too. So can freezer owners in Houston and Los Angeles. We may need to loosen both to slide one out.
