What a Miele freezer alarm is telling you
A Miele freezer sounds an alarm and flashes its display when it gets too warm inside. Miele says this can happen after the door was open a long time, or after you load a lot of warm food. In that case the freezer pulls back down by itself. No repair is needed.
If the alarm returns with the door shut, take it seriously. The freezer is losing ground. Food at the top thaws first. Move what you can to a cooler and call us.
Miele freezer models we repair
Miele sells built-in freezers under the MasterCool name. They are tall columns that stand 84 inches high. Many sit next to a matching Miele fridge column. Miele also builds bottom-mount units with a freezer drawer under the fridge.
MasterCool freezers are NoFrost. That means a fan and a heater clear frost for you, with no manual defrost. Most have an ice maker and a Push2open door that opens with a light press. Read more on the Miele appliance repair page. If the warm section is the fridge, not the freezer, go to Miele refrigerator repair.
Frost is the next thing to read. A NoFrost freezer should have bare walls. Snow on the back panel or on food means the defrost system missed its turn. The heater, its sensor or the control that runs them has failed. Frost then chokes the coil and the fan cannot push air through.
Frost only around the door edge has another cause. Room air is leaking in. The gasket is torn, dirty or pushed out of line. On a Push2open door, the opener can also hold the door a hair ajar if it sticks.
A freezer works harder than a fridge
A freezer holds near zero degrees. A fridge holds the high thirties. So the freezer coil runs far colder and the compressor carries a bigger load. Small faults show up sooner here.
A slow evaporator fan that a fridge could live with will let a freezer warm up. A condenser clogged with dust costs a freezer more. And a weak compressor shows in the freezer first. When we test a Miele freezer, we read the coil frost pattern, the fan speed and the compressor draw.
Ice maker makes little or no ice
Miele lists a few checks for this. Make sure the water line is open and not kinked. Check that house water pressure is high enough. Rinse or replace the water filter. Miele also notes it can take up to 24 hours for ice to start after a new install.
Small or odd shaped cubes point to the filter as well. If water is good and ice is still poor, the fill valve and the ice maker unit get tested. A fill tube can freeze shut too. We thaw it and then look for the reason it froze.
Checks you can do with the door closed
- Read the set temperature on the display. Zero degrees is the usual target.
- Make sure a fast freeze or vacation mode was not left on by mistake.
- Run a hand around the door seal to find any cold leak.
- Listen at the base grille for the fan.
- Never chip frost off with a knife. The coil is thin.
Response time, fee and 30-day repair warranty
A warm freezer cannot wait, so we aim to come the same day. Calls and online bookings are taken from early morning through 9 PM, every day. The tech is insured, licensed and background checked.
It costs $79 to have a home freezer tested. When you approve the fix, that cost is waived. He tells you a fixed total for parts and labor ahead of time. Fans, heaters and sensors for common models ride in his truck. Miele parts that are not on hand get ordered at once. The repair carries a 30-day repair warranty.
A built-in freezer is worth saving
A MasterCool column is one of the most costly things in a kitchen. The cabinet panels are made to fit it. So a fan, a defrost part, a gasket or an ice maker is always worth doing. Even sealed system work can make sense on these.
We will say so if the unit is very old and parts are gone. That is rare with Miele.
