Maytag fridge styles
Maytag makes French door fridges, some in counter depth. It makes top freezer models in 30 and 33 inch widths. It also sells side-by-side and bottom freezer units.
Many have the PowerCold feature. It drops the temperature fast after the doors have been open a lot. BrightSeries LED lights are common inside. The finish is often fingerprint resistant stainless steel.
Inside, these are plain, sturdy machines. One compressor, one cold coil in the freezer, and fans to move the air.
Fridge not cold enough
This is the top Maytag fridge complaint. We work through it in order.
First the coil in the freezer. If it is buried in frost, defrost has failed. The heater, the thermostat on the coil or the control is bad.
Next the evaporator fan. It pushes cold air from the freezer to the fridge. If it stops, the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms.
Then the back and bottom. A dirty condenser coil holds heat in. A dead condenser fan does the same. The compressor runs hot and cools poorly.
Top freezer models
Top freezer Maytags are simple. Cold air drops from the freezer through a vent. A damper or a slide control sets how much. If the vent ices up, the fridge warms. If the control is set wrong, the fridge freezes the lettuce. We check the vent, the fan and the defrost parts.
French door models
French door units add an ice maker and water system. They have more to go wrong.
- The ice maker stops after the fill tube freezes.
- The water valve hums but no water comes.
- The freezer drawer gasket tears and frost builds on the food.
- The center flap between the doors does not fold, and the doors will not seal.
- Water shows up under the crisper when the defrost drain clogs.
Side-by-side models put the ice maker in the freezer door or high in the freezer. The auger motor that moves ice to the door chute can strip or stall. When that happens, you hear a hum and get no ice at the door.
A buzz or rattle at the rear usually means the condenser fan is hitting dust or a loose wire. Chirps and squeals inside the freezer come from the evaporator fan. Steady clicking with no cooling is a start relay on the compressor. Popping as the fridge cools is normal.
Owner checks that help
- Vacuum the coil under or behind the fridge.
- Keep food clear of the vents in both sections.
- Check that the doors shut on their own from halfway.
- Replace the water filter on schedule.
- Look at the settings after kids have been at the panel.
Booking, price and the tech
We open the phones at 6 AM and keep them open until 9 PM, seven days. Warm fridge calls go to the front of the line, and same-day service is common. The diagnostic fee is $79 for a residence. We waive it when you approve the fixed quote. That quote has labor and parts together. Each fridge tech we send is insured and licensed and has a background check on file. Your repair is covered by a 30-day repair warranty. A+ is independent from the maker.
When to repair a Maytag fridge
Fans, defrost parts, relays, valves and ice makers are worth doing. Maytag parts are easy to get through the Whirlpool family. A failed compressor on a basic top freezer model is the usual stop sign. That repair can run nearly as much as a new fridge. On a large French door model, it is a closer call. We will walk you through it.
D.C. homes can book on our D.C. appliance repair page. See refrigerator repair and Maytag appliance repair for more. Stand-alone units are under Maytag freezer repair. We check both sections with a meter before we close the job.
