How a Liebherr NoFrost freezer keeps frost away
Liebherr freezers use a system the company calls NoFrost. Cold air is blown through the drawers by a fan. Moisture in that air is caught by the evaporator, the cold coil. Liebherr hides the coil behind a panel in the upper part of the freezer. A heater melts the frost off the coil from time to time. The water drains away and the cycle starts again.
So in a healthy Liebherr, you should never see frost on the food or the walls. When you do, one link in that chain has broken. This page is about freezers only. For fresh food units, see Liebherr refrigerator repair.
Frost and ice inside a NoFrost freezer
- Snow on the back or top panel. The defrost heater has burned out.
- Ice on the coil cover, fan noise. The defrost sensor is not ending or starting the cycle.
- Frost near the door only. The door gasket is torn, or a drawer keeps the door ajar.
- Sheet of ice on the floor. The defrost drain is frozen shut.
- Frost after a power cut. The control did not restart the defrost timer.
Do not chip at the ice with a knife. The coil is thin tubing, and one slip lets the gas out. If you must act, empty the freezer and leave the door open with towels down. Then call us, since the ice will come back until the part is fixed.
Soft food, warm temps and garage freezers
Soft ice cream is the early sign. First, check the SuperFrost light. SuperFrost drives the freezer to its coldest setting to freeze a big load fast. Liebherr says it goes back to normal by itself within 65 hours. It will not harm the unit, but it tells you the controls work.
If the temp is truly high, we look at air and heat. The evaporator fan may have stopped, so cold stays at the coil. The condenser at the base or back may be matted with dust. On built-in columns the air path is tight, so dust hurts fast. A condenser fan that has quit is another cause. Last comes the sealed system. That is the compressor and the gas loop. We test the rest first because those parts cost much less.
Many freezers fail in the cold, which sounds odd. Liebherr builds its freezers with FrostProtect. The parts are made to work in rooms as cold as 5 degrees. So a Liebherr in a garage should run fine in winter. If yours warms up when the garage gets cold, a sensor or the control is likely at fault. It is not the weather.
Ice maker and alarm faults
Some Liebherr freezers have an IceMaker with a fixed water line. No ice most often means a frozen fill tube or a failed water valve. A kinked supply line behind the unit is the next check. Cubes that come out small or hollow mean the water pressure is low.
The door alarm sounds when the door is not sealed. The temp alarm sounds when the freezer gets too warm inside. Owners with the SmartDevice app may get the alert on a phone. Note which alarm you have. It tells us whether to bring gaskets or cooling parts.
What a Liebherr freezer visit costs
A freezer diagnostic at home is $79. It is taken off once the freezer repair is approved. Ahead of the work, the freezer quote is one set figure with labor and parts counted. Freezer calls start at 6 AM, with the last slot at 9 PM, and most are seen that day. As an independent repair company, A+ backs freezer work with a warranty.
Repair or replace a Liebherr freezer
Heaters, sensors, fans, gaskets and ice makers are all good repairs. A Monolith or other built-in column is fitted to your cabinets, so fixing it saves carpentry. A sealed system fault on an old freestanding unit is where we slow down. We will price it and tell you what we would do.
Where we fix Liebherr freezers
Chicago and its suburbs are a big part of our Liebherr work. The Illinois appliance repair page has the town list. Liebherr freezer calls also come from the District, from Houston, from Northern Virginia and from greater Los Angeles. See our Liebherr appliance repair page and our freezer repair page for more. Until we get there, keep the door closed. A full Liebherr freezer holds its cold far longer than a half empty one, so do not move the food unless you must.
