This is the most common GE microwave fault. The plate turns and the light is on. After two minutes the coffee is still cold. GE's support page gives two checks first. Make sure you did not set the kitchen timer instead of a cook time. Then check that the door is shut tight.
If both are fine, a part has failed. The usual one is the magnetron, the tube that turns power into microwaves. It wears out over time. The high voltage diode and capacitor feed it, and each can fail. A door switch with a burned contact can let the fan run and block the heat. A microwave stores a strong charge in its capacitor. It can stay there with the cord pulled. That charge can badly hurt you. Our techs drain it with the right tool before they reach inside. Please leave the outer cover screwed on.
GE explains that the door must close on its safety switches before the oven can run. A microwave has more than one of these switches. If one fails, pressing Start does nothing. A worn door latch or a cracked hook gives the same result. So does a blown main fuse, which often follows a bad switch.
A blank display is a different fault. We check the outlet, the fuse and the control board. GE suggests pulling the plug for a while as a reset. For an over-the-range unit, the plug is in the cabinet above.
An over-the-range GE is a microwave and a vent hood. It has a fan, lights and grease filters on the bottom. Those parts have their own faults:
The unit hangs from a wall plate and bolts through the cabinet. Taking one down is a two-handed job. We bring it down, fix it and hang it back.
On sensor cycles the oven waits for steam from the food. GE notes the sensor will not work when the oven is already hot. If sensor reheat always ends too soon or runs too long, the humidity sensor may be bad. Timed cooking still works in that case.
Sparks usually come from the small cover on the side wall. It is called a waveguide cover. Grease on it burns and arcs. A chipped spot in the paint can spark too. A new cover is a small part. A hole burned through the metal wall is not fixable.
