Ask any GE fridge tech and this call comes up first. The ice cream is hard and the lettuce is warm. Cold air starts at the evaporator coil, which hides behind the rear panel of the freezer. A fan pushes it through a duct to the fresh food side. When frost packs that coil, no air gets through.
Frost builds when the defrost system fails. That means the defrost heater, its sensor or the board that runs it. A dead evaporator fan gives the same warm fridge with no frost at all. You may hear it chirp or rattle for weeks first. We pull the panel, look at the coil and test each part. See the other GE products we fix on our General Electric repair page.
Before we blame a part, we look at the filter. GE says a clogged filter can starve both the ice maker and the dispenser. It advises a new filter every six months. Many GE fridges take the RPWFE filter. That filter has a chip the fridge reads. With a wrong or copy filter, the dispenser will not work. The screen may even read Leak Detected.
GE's test is simple. Take the filter out and fit the bypass plug that came with the fridge. If water flows, the filter was the fault. If it does not, we test further.
When the filter is fine, these are the usual causes of no ice:
Cubes that are small or hollow point to weak water flow. A sheet of ice under the ice maker means the valve drips when it should be closed.
A puddle under the crisper drawers of a side-by-side often comes from a leaking water line. Water or a slab of ice on the freezer floor of a French door model is a clogged defrost drain. Melt water cannot reach the pan below, so it freezes where it sits. We clear the drain and test the small heater that keeps it open.
When both sides are warm, listen at the back. A click now and then is the compressor making a start attempt and giving up. The start relay or the inverter board may be bad. A fan running with a silent compressor points the same way. Dust on the condenser coil can also make a fridge run warm in summer. We clean it as part of the check.
Look at the set temperatures on the display. Make sure a showroom or demo mode is not on. Feel for air at the vents inside. Check that the filter says FRONT on the side you can see. Pull the fridge out a little and look for a kinked water line.
