The drum spins and the timer counts, yet the load comes out cold. On an electric GE, we check the power first. GE notes that the motor can run on 120 volts. The heater needs the full 240. So one tripped leg of a double breaker gives you a dryer that spins cold.
If the power is good, the heat circuit is next. A blown thermal fuse is the usual find. It fails when the dryer overheats, most often from a clogged vent. The heating element can also break. A dryer that needs two cycles is nearly always short on air flow. GE tells owners to clean the vent at least once a year. It also says the duct should be rigid metal or flexible metal. Plastic duct is not allowed. A crushed hose behind the dryer acts like a closed door.
Some GE models are rated for very long vent runs, up to 120 feet. Even those need a clear path. We measure the air at the outside hood. If it is weak, the duct needs cleaning before any part will help.
Noise tells us a lot. We match the sound to the part:
The belt often frays at the same time. We look at all of them with the drum out, so the job is done once.
GE dryers with Sensor Dry feel the load with a pair of metal strips inside the drum. Dryer sheets leave a film on those strips. Then the board reads wet clothes as dry and ends early. Clean the strips using a cloth and a dab of rubbing alcohol. If timed dry works and sensor dry does not, that film is the likely cause.
One GE machine is a special case.
The GE Profile UltraFast Combo washes and dries in one drum. It uses a heat pump and needs no vent to the outside. Poor drying on a combo is usually weak air flow through its lint filter. It can also be a drain fault, since the water it pulls from the clothes has to pump out.
Pull the lint screen. If water beads on the mesh, scrub it with dish soap. Check that the dryer is set to a heat cycle, not air fluff. Look at the breaker. Walk outside and feel for air at the vent hood while it runs. For a gas model, make sure the gas valve handle lines up with the pipe.
The tech tests the dryer, finds the fault and explains it in plain words. For a home the diagnostic is $79. Have us fix the dryer and the $79 is not billed. The price you hear is fixed, with labor and the part inside it. Belts, fuses, rollers and igniters ride on the truck. We book from 6 AM until 9 PM, Sunday through Saturday, and a same-day slot is usual. We are independent. GE dryer techs hold insurance and a license, and each cleared a background check.
Almost always. A dryer is a simple machine, and GE parts are widely stocked. A fuse, a belt kit or an igniter runs far below the price of another GE dryer. We would think about replacing when the drum has cracked or the motor and board are both bad.
