GE programs fault codes into its electronic dishwashers. They give a tech a head start. GE's support site lists them, and a few come up again and again. FTD or F56 means the machine failed to drain. H2O means it is low on water. C4 points at a float switch that is stuck or has failed. C7 means the water heat sensor circuit has quit. LEAK DETECTED means the machine has sensed a possible leak.
GE says cutting power for a minute will sometimes clear a code. If the same one returns, a part needs testing. Write the code down before you reset it. It saves time on the visit. Our General Electric repair page covers the full GE family.
More GE dishwasher calls are about draining than anything else. Dirty water sits in the sump at the end of the cycle. We start with the filter and the sump, since food and glass collect there. Then we test the drain pump. A pump that hums with no flow is jammed or worn out.
The cause is not always in the dishwasher. GE's own steps say to check the air gap, the drain hose and the disposer. A new disposer with the plug still in it will block the drain fully. A hose with no high loop lets sink water run back in.
With an H2O message, check the shutoff valve under the sink first. Look for a kinked supply line too. If water is on and the tub stays dry, the inlet valve may have failed. A float that is stuck in the up position will also stop the fill. Tap the float cover lightly and see if it drops.
Poor cleaning is often poor flow. These are the parts we check:
Water that is too cool hurts cleaning as well. GE lists C6 for low water heat and asks for 120 degrees at the tap. Run the hot faucet for a minute before you start a load.
A drip at the bottom corners of the door is usually the gasket. It hardens and flattens with age. Water from under the unit can be a split hose, a loose clamp or a worn pump seal. Too many suds will also push water out the door. Use only dishwasher soap, never hand soap.

At a house the diagnostic runs $79. We waive that once you approve the repair. First you are handed a set price with labor and parts combined. We are an independent company. GE dishwasher parts are easy to find. A drain pump, inlet valve, gasket or float switch is a fair repair on most machines. We slow down when the tub has rusted or the main board and the wash motor are both gone. Then a new unit may cost about the same.
