BlueStar sells hoods in a Professional Series and a Designer Series. Names include Pro-Line, Pyramid, Manhattan, Hampton, Bonanza, Wrangler and Sahara. Most come as a wall hood or an island hood. Widths run from under 30 inches to well over 60.
Here we cover only the hood shell and what is in it. That means the blower inside it, the lights, the filters and the knobs. Liners, in-line blowers and roof blowers are on our BlueStar ventilation repair page.
The in-hood blower comes in two sizes. BlueStar lists one at 600 CFM and one at 1,200 CFM. On high, the maker rates them at about 62 and 64 decibels. That is a steady rush of air. It should not rattle, squeal or grind.
A rattle is often a loose blower wheel or a screw in the housing. A squeal points to dry motor bearings. If it hums and moves no air, think stuck motor or dead capacitor. The capacitor is a small part that helps the motor start. We test it first because it is a quick swap. A motor with rough bearings gets replaced.
Start with the filters. BlueStar hoods use metal baffle filters. Grease builds up in the slots and chokes the air flow. A packed filter also makes the motor work harder and run hot.
If the filters are clean, we look past the hood. A damper flap sits where the hood meets the duct. It should swing open when the fan starts. Grease can glue it shut. We also check that the duct is the right size. BlueStar calls for a 6 inch duct on the 600 CFM blower. The 1,200 CFM blower needs a 10 inch duct, or 8 inches at the least. A smaller duct makes more noise and moves less air.
When one light is out, it is nearly always the bulb. When all the lights are out, we test the switch and the wiring. Heat and grease are hard on sockets. A socket with burned contacts will kill new bulbs fast.
The fan control takes the same abuse. A worn speed control may give you high speed only. It may also do nothing on the low settings. We replace the control and check the motor draw while we are there.
Turn the power off at the breaker before you reach past the filters.
A hood diagnostic at a house is $79. Approve the work and we cancel that charge. Our tech tests the hood, names the failed part and quotes a set price. Parts and labor are both in that number.

A BlueStar hood is mostly a steel shell. The shell does not wear out. The motor, the switch and the sockets do, and each can be changed alone. Our repair warranty covers the job.
Taking a hood down is also real work. It is screwed to the wall, wired in and tied to a duct. Painted hoods are matched to the range. A new motor keeps all of that in place.
