Burner and element trouble on freestanding stoves

A stove takes daily spills right on its top. Boiled-over pasta water can run into the burner ports, the small holes where the flame comes out. Clogged ports give a weak or uneven flame. Spills also soak the spark switch, which makes the burners click nonstop. On electric models, a loose coil can scorch its socket, the plug it sits in. Radiant tops lose an element or the switch that sets its heat. Older Wilmette homes may also have aging gas valves behind the stove.

Our visit, step by step

Each burner gets lit or switched on so we can see its flame or glow. Next we clean the ports, test the spark module and check the switch on each knob. Socket and switch repairs are usually quick and sensible. A stove with a cracked top and several bad parts may not be worth the bill. We will say so plainly. Stoves in the old Gross Point area

West Wilmette was once part of a separate village called Gross Point. That village was dissolved in 1919 after going bankrupt. Wilmette then annexed the land in parts, in 1924 and 1926. The old Gross Point Village Hall still stands and now houses the Wilmette Historical Society. Kitchens on this side of town range from older homes to full remodels. Hard-working freestanding stoves are a common sight in them.
